Ever felt like you’re always waiting for someone to leave — even when they haven’t?
Abandonment trauma can quietly shape how we love, trust, and see ourselves. Recognizing the signs is the first step toward healing and reclaiming your peace.

Swipe through or pause for a moment — these 12 indicators might help you understand your own patterns or someone you care about. Healing starts with awareness.

When kids feel like they belong at school, everything changes. They feel valued, understood, and truly connected — and that confidence shines through in their learning and mental health.

Teachers, parents, and caregivers all play a part in building classrooms where every child feels seen, encouraged, and included. Let’s keep working together to make school a place where belonging grows.

✨ “Find out who you are and do it on purpose.” — Dolly Parton ✨

This week, Tennessee feels a little different. 💗

Dolly Parton gave the world extraordinary music, but her legacy was always about so much more than the songs.

She showed us what it looks like to know who you are—and refuse to shrink it.

She was glamorous and grounded.
Strong and tender.
Funny and wise.
Ambitious and generous.
Unapologetically herself.

And perhaps that is one of the greatest lessons Dolly leaves behind:

You do not have to become someone else to belong.

As therapists, we spend so much of our work helping people peel away the expectations, the masking, the people-pleasing, the perfectionism, and all the messages about who they should be—so they can begin discovering the person underneath it all.

Dolly seemed to understand something beautifully simple:

🌸 Know yourself.
✨ Accept yourself.
💗 Use your gifts.
🌱 Keep growing.
🤲 And give some of what you’ve been given back to others.

Her generosity made that philosophy tangible. Through the Imagination Library, she helped put books into the hands of millions of children. She invested in her Tennessee roots, championed literacy, and demonstrated that success and kindness never have to compete. (The Atlantic)

And she didn’t just tell people to be themselves. She lived it.

In 2025, Dolly expanded on her famous words:

“Find out who you are and do it on purpose. And do it with purpose.” (The Independent)

What a beautiful invitation for all of us.

Find the things that make your heart come alive.
Discover what matters to you.
Wear the rhinestones if you love the rhinestones. ✨
Love people well.
Use your gifts generously.
And don’t spend your life becoming who everyone else thinks you’re supposed to be.

Find out who you are.
Then go be that person—on purpose. 💗

Thank you, Dolly, for the music, the laughter, the books, the generosity, the authenticity, and for reminding generations of Tennesseans—and the world—that there is incredible power in simply being fully yourself.

Rest well, Dolly. 🦋✨
Your light will keep shining.

Homeschooling gives kids flexibility—but that doesn’t mean navigating the day is always easy.

Our Homeschool Support Group for 4th–7th graders is a 10-week, small-group experience designed to support the skills underneath learning, relationships, and everyday functioning.

Led by Allison Battles, LPC-MHSP-S and Summer Yanosko, BCBA, the group brings together therapeutic and behavioral perspectives to help us understand the whole child—not simply whether an assignment gets completed.

We’ll explore and practice:

Executive Functioning
Planning, organization, task initiation, working memory, flexible thinking, transitions, time awareness, and figuring out how to get started when something feels overwhelming.

Sensory Profiles & Regulation
Helping kids notice how their individual sensory systems affect attention, energy, comfort, participation, and regulation—and discover practical strategies that work for their bodies and brains.

Interoception
Building awareness of internal body signals and learning to connect those signals with emotions, needs, energy, hunger, stress, and regulation.

Mood & Energy Calibration
Learning to recognize, communicate, and respond to different levels of energy and emotion—without expecting kids to be “calm” all the time.

Social Skills & Connection
Practicing communication, perspective-taking, collaboration, boundaries, problem-solving, friendship skills, and navigating the natural give-and-take of being with other people.

Homework & Independent Work
Dedicated space to apply these skills in real time. Rather than simply saying “focus” or “get organized,” we can help kids identify what is getting in the way and practice strategies that make learning more manageable.

The goal isn’t to make every child function the same way.

It’s to help each student better understand how they function—and build practical tools for learning, relationships, regulation, and increasing independence.

📣 Can We Talk About Whistles in the Lunchroom? 🧠💗

For many children, lunch is one of the only parts of the school day when they get to simply TALK to their friends.

They have spent their morning listening, following directions, transitioning, completing assignments, managing expectations, keeping their bodies still, navigating social situations, and—in some cases—working incredibly hard just to stay regulated.

Then they enter the cafeteria.

Hundreds of voices.
Chairs scraping.
Trays clattering.
Announcements.
Children moving everywhere.

And then…

📣 A whistle blows.

For some children, that whistle isn't simply a signal to quiet down.

It can feel sharp, startling, unpredictable, and physically overwhelming.

For a child with sensory sensitivities, Autism, ADHD, anxiety, trauma history, auditory defensiveness, or a nervous system that is already working overtime, a sudden high-pitched whistle can contribute to dysregulation rather than regulation.

And here is another piece we sometimes forget:

💗 Kids need connection.

Lunch isn't wasted instructional time.

Conversation with peers helps children practice:

✨ Friendship
✨ Social communication
✨ Conflict resolution
✨ Humor
✨ Perspective-taking
✨ Belonging
✨ Self-advocacy
✨ Relationship building

For some children, lunch may be one of the very few opportunities during the school day when spontaneous conversation with peers is actually allowed.

So when the cafeteria becomes too loud, the question shouldn't only be:

"How do we make the children quieter?"

Maybe we should also ask:

🧠 What is making this environment so difficult to regulate?

🧠 Can we use visual cues instead of startling auditory signals?

🧠 Can lights, music, hand signals, visual noise meters, calm verbal prompts, or predictable routines accomplish the same goal?

🧠 Can we protect opportunities for children to connect while still maintaining a safe cafeteria environment?

This isn't about blaming educators or cafeteria staff. 💗

School staff are often managing an incredibly challenging environment with hundreds of children at once.

It's about getting curious about the environment we are creating for children's nervous systems.

Because sometimes what looks like a behavior problem is actually a child saying:

"This environment is too much for my body."

And sometimes the solution isn't asking the child to regulate harder.

Sometimes we can make the environment easier to regulate within.

🧠💗 Regulation before expectation.
Connection matters.
Sensory needs matter.
And yes—lunchroom conversations matter too.
