Please help us welcome Olivia to the SHIFT team! 🎉👋

Olivia is our new Playroom Manager and is working toward her degree to become a Neuro Sonography Technician. She brings a variety of childcare experience, including as a Childcare Team Lead at the YMCA of Frederick and as a Registered Behavior Technician working one-on-one with children with autism and other developmental disabilities. She's also skilled in ASL and loves helping deaf families and children communicate—and teaching a few signs to everyone along the way. 😄

Olivia believes no child should ever feel isolated or treated differently, and that kind of care and intention is exactly what we look for in our playroom team.

Kyla is our new playroom attendant, currently working toward her Early Childhood Education degree at Mount St. Mary's University. She brings hands-on experience from Frederick County Parks & Rec, where she started as inclusion support staff before becoming a camp counselor and assistant coordinator.

Kyla loves being around kids and watching their personalities grow. She's especially passionate about being a steady source of comfort and support for the children she works with. Outside of SHIFT, you'll find her reading or making memories with the people she loves.

We're so glad to have her energy and heart in the playroom. Welcome, Kyla! 💛

Two hours. One bin of wooden blocks. Endless imagination. 🧱

Today we built towering stacks, turned a pile of blocks into a haunted house, improvised a hockey game, and made a few things I still can’t quite explain (but loved anyway). This is what open-ended play looks like — no screens, no instructions, just kids figuring things out.

Block play builds so much more than towers: spatial reasoning, fine motor skills, patience, problem-solving, and serious collaboration and creativity. Simple materials, big brain-building. ✨

Not a bad way to spend a Tuesday. 💙

We’re proud to support Stuff the Bus with United Way of Frederick County, Maryland!

Through August 3, we’re collecting new, unused school supplies to help local students start the school year prepared and ready to learn.

Members can help by donating items like backpacks, notebooks, pencils, crayons, folders, and other classroom essentials. The big yellow bin is back in its usual spot by the front door!

Together, we can help students throughout Frederick County head back to school with confidence.

If you know a true "kid person" in the Frederick area, we'd love an introduction. We're looking for someone to lead play sessions for children 18 months–6 years in our onsite playroom — small groups (max 6 kids), a set weekday schedule, and a genuinely joyful workplace.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐬:

- $18/hour, guaranteed minimum 20 paid hours/week year-round

- Monday–Thursday 8:15 AM–4:15 PM, Fridays 8:15 AM–12:15 PM (yes, every Friday afternoon off!)

- No nights or weekends required (optional monthly weekend evening)

- Starts Monday, August 3 with a paid week of training
