🚧 Stop Selling Safety. Nobody's Buying It. 🚧
One of the biggest mistakes we make in safety training is trying to sell safety.
The truth is, most workers don't come to work motivated by safety. They come to work motivated by what safety helps them protect.
Their family.
Their paycheck.
Their future.
Their retirement.
Their ability to coach their kid's ball team, go hunting on the weekend, ride their motorcycle, or simply enjoy life outside of work.
That's why effective safety training isn't about showing endless pictures of things done wrong.
It's about teaching people how to do things right.
Instead of focusing on accidents, show employees what success looks like.
Instead of leading with rules, lead with purpose.
Instead of saying, "Follow this procedure because it's company policy," explain what that procedure protects in their life.
For example, a trench box isn't just there to satisfy a regulation. It's there so a worker can go home tonight and be with the people who depend on them.
The hard hat, the fall protection, the lockout/tagout procedure, and the excavation inspection are all tools.
The real goal is protecting a person's future.
Every employee buys into safety for a different reason. Great leaders take the time to find out what that reason is and connect safe work practices to what matters most to that individual.
When employees understand the personal benefits of working safely, compliance becomes commitment.
Stop selling safety.
Start selling what safety provides.
That's where real buy-in begins.
