Yoga for Grief & Loss and Chronic Pain

The two courses I’ll be taking at the Mind Body Fitness Conference in November.

I’ve selected my continuing education as a yoga teacher that I’ll be taking this fall. Both are deeply personal to me and I hope what I learn will be a blessing both for me as a yoga teacher and practitioner and the students that roll their mats out with me. I am humbled to lead you in this beautiful practice called yoga. 🙏

Looking forward to spending time with my fellow YogaFit teachers in Arlington. (If you haven’t registered yet, reach out to Mel B. who has all the details.)

I know these subjects will also greatly complement my 9-5 with the Marine Corps.

“I wanna feel sunlight on my face…”

Grateful for the opportunity to spend the week at 29 Palms training Marines and for the chance the spend two evenings after training in Joshua Tree National Park. The stress of the pace, pressure, and broken relationships for gain that is often accepted as “normal” climate in northern Virginia and the national capital region was closing in hard on me over the last few weeks and months and this land and people gave me a chance to recalibrate.

Joshua Tree is unlike any national park I’ve been to.

Vast.
Spiritual.
Quiet.
Sacred.

Despite the temperature rolling out three digit numbers, the air felt pure and clean. As it settled into the 80’s after the sunset, it felt cool. No humidity. The sunlight was strong, healing, and rejuvenating.

You’ll feel small at Joshua Tree because it will remind you that you’re connected to something bigger & larger than yourself and the worries you carry - a higher power.

“The city’s a flood
And our love turns to rust
We’re beaten and blown by the wind
Trampled in dust
I’ll show you a place
High on the desert plain
Where the streets have no name”

When the band U2 traveled there in the 80’s, lead singer Bono found inspiration in the landscape - connecting the Joshua Tree’s raised branches to Joshua lifting his hands in prayer. “The stark landscape anchored the album’s themes of hope, despair, and the search for deeper meaning.”

And isn’t that what we’re all searching for? Hope and deeper meaning? It’s there. 🙏

On International Day of Yoga and the Summer Solstice, I’m reminded that true alignment isn’t just found on the mat - it’s found in leadership as well - in our families, professional lives, and community relationships, and most of all in the way we lead ourselves. When our actions align with our values, and leaders are aligned based on shared values and mission, trust becomes the foundation for everything that follows. It’s free of ego and competition and creates this beautiful space where the most important work of our lives can happen.

I came to yoga about 13 years ago with a mission to help others. I stayed because what I found were core values that set the foundation for the way I want to live.

Happy 2026 International Day of Yoga!

Every time we step onto our mats we have the opportunity to allow ourselves to be distracted or directed.

It’s no different off the mat. Chaos at work? It can be a distraction or it can be a guidepost to double down on mission focused strategy. An argument with a family member? A distraction that pulls us away from our true selves or a signal to realign with our values? While we can’t control the external, we can choose what happens next. This is one of the greatest gifts yoga has given me - tools that have allowed me to ride the waves versus getting pulled under.

I get it wrong sometimes, but that’s part of life. Keep growing.

Hope to see you soon at Dragonfly Yoga Studio. 🧘‍♀️

Yin yoga nurtures the breath, body, and mind.

Some of the many reasons yin yoga is so important for our yoga practice include the sequences, poses, and holds directly correlating with marma points.

You may be familiar with chakra energy. Marmas are energy wells and wheels connected by meridian lines that act as conduits (nadis) with organs and other parts of the body. This is one of the reasons we feel so good after a yin practice.

Marmas are generally more physical than chakras, which are more related to subtle body.

Yin yoga helps prana (breath) flow from organs to energy channels. Our breath requires an unimpeded path.

Grateful for the practice of yin. 🙏
