💉 Measles: What Parents Need to Know

With measles outbreaks continuing across the U.S., now is an important time for families to make sure children are protected.

Measles is highly contagious and can spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Symptoms can include a high fever, cough, runny nose, red or watery eyes, followed by a blotchy rash.

Vaccination is the best way to help protect children and prevent the spread of measles. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends two routine doses of the MMR vaccine, with the first at 12–15 months and the second at 4–6 years. Recommendations may differ during an outbreak or for certain travel situations.

At The Children’s Clinic of Fredericksburg, we encourage parents to review their child’s immunization history and talk with their pediatrician if they have questions about measles or the MMR vaccine.

💧 Know the Signs of Dehydration in Kids

Hot weather, stomach bugs, and increased outdoor activity can all make it easier for children to become dehydrated. Knowing what to watch for can help you act before symptoms become more serious.

If your child has a dry mouth, fewer wet diapers or bathroom trips, is less active than usual, or isn't producing tears when crying, they may be dehydrated. Severe symptoms such as excessive sleepiness, sunken eyes, cool hands and feet, or very little urination require prompt medical attention.

If you're concerned about your child's hydration or they're not feeling well, our pediatric team is here to help evaluate their symptoms and provide the care they need.
