Mental health crisis are among the leading threats to the health and well-being of teens today in America. 🚩
Self-harm among teens is more common than most people think. It is often a sign of emotional distress and dysregulation. Teens may engage in self-harm as a way to cope with overwhelming emotions, anxiety, depression, trauma responses, or simply not knowing how to express themselves.
Warning signs can include unexplained cuts, marks, or bruises, wearing long sleeves in warm weather, withdrawing from family and friends, or sudden changes in mood and behavior.
The most important thing that we can do is respond with a nonjudgmental and compassionate attitude. Open conversations, supportive relationships, and professional mental healthcare can help teens develop healthy coping skills and begin healing.
If you are concerned about a teen, don't know how to approach the conversation, or the steps to take next, don't ignore the signs. Reaching out could make a life-changing difference.
