Quick question — when did you last have your hearing tested? 👂

If you can’t remember, you’re not alone. Most people wait an average of 7 to 10 years after first noticing hearing difficulty before doing anything about it.

Here’s what the guidelines actually recommend:

🔊 Ages 18–40: Every 10 years (to establish a baseline)
🔊 Ages 40–60: Every 3–5 years
🔊 Ages 60+: Every year
🔊 Already wearing hearing aids: Annually — your hearing changes, and your devices need to keep up

And don’t wait for the "scheduled" time if:
✔️ You’ve noticed any change in your hearing
✔️ You have tinnitus (ringing, buzzing)
✔️ You work around loud noise regularly
✔️ Someone in your life has said something about your hearing

The evaluation itself takes about an hour, is completely painless, and tells you exactly where you stand. Most people are relieved just to have a real answer.

Do you know the difference between an audiologist and a hearing aid dispenser? 🤔

They both sell hearing aids. But that’s where the similarities end.

👩‍🏫 An audiologist holds a Doctorate of Audiology (Au.D.) — typically 8 years of education covering diagnosis, hearing loss, tinnitus, auditory processing disorders, and balance. They can evaluate, diagnose, and treat the full range of hearing health concerns.

🏥 A hearing aid dispenser is licensed to fit and sell hearing aids. In New Jersey, the educational requirement can be as limited as a high school diploma plus supervised training.

Here’s what most people in NJ don’t know: until 2019, audiologists in NJ needed a SEPARATE license just to sell hearing aids. That changed — meaning an NJ audiologist can now do everything a dispenser can do, and a whole lot more.

Why does it matter?

✅ A dispenser fits devices. An audiologist diagnoses what’s actually causing your hearing loss — which isn’t always what you think.
✅ Some hearing problems aren’t hearing loss at all. They’re tinnitus, auditory processing disorder, or a medical condition that a hearing aid won’t fix.
✅ Credentials matter. Look for Au.D., CCC-A, or ABA after the name.

Most people know about the usual fall risks — slippery rugs, poor lighting, medication side effects. But there’s one risk factor that almost never gets talked about:

Hearing loss.

People with hearing loss are 3 times more likely to fall than those with normal hearing. Here’s why:

🔊 The hearing organ and the balance organ live in the same inner ear. When one degrades with age, the other often does too.
🔊 When you can’t hear well, your brain works harder to process sound — and that extra mental effort comes directly at the expense of balance and spatial awareness.
🔊 Hearing loss reduces the environmental audio cues that help us navigate safely — without us even realizing it.

For every 10 dB of hearing loss, fall risk goes up by 40%. A 2025 study found older adults with hearing loss are 2.4x more likely to fall. And the 2022 World Guidelines for Falls Prevention now recommend hearing be checked as part of every fall risk evaluation.

Ever had a hearing test and walked out staring at a graph with no idea what it meant? 🤔

You’re not alone. Most patients see their audiogram for the first time at the end of their appointment — and most don’t know how to read it.

Here’s the quick version:

🔊 The left side of the graph = low-pitched sounds (vowels)
🔊 The right side = high-pitched sounds (consonants like S, F, SH, TH)
🔊 The higher up a dot is on the graph — the better you hear at that pitch
🔊 The further down — the more hearing loss at that frequency

⭕ Red O symbols = right ear
❌ Blue X symbols = left ear

And the "Speech Banana?" That’s the zone on the audiogram where all the sounds of spoken language live. When your thresholds fall below it, those sounds become inaudible — which is exactly why people say "I can hear you, I just can’t understand you."

Before you buy an OTC hearing aid from a shelf or website — read this. 👀

Here’s something most people don’t realize about over-the-counter hearing aids: they amplify sound the same way for everyone. Every single person who buys one gets the same general amplification profile, regardless of what their actual hearing loss looks like.

But no two hearing losses are the same.

One person might have high-frequency loss. Another might have mid-frequency loss. A third might have loss only in one ear — which can actually be a sign of something medically significant. An OTC device can’t tell the difference. It just makes things louder and hopes for the best.

And here’s what nobody mentions: sometimes what feels like hearing loss is actually just earwax. A professional can remove it in one appointment and your hearing comes back completely — no device needed.

Without a proper hearing evaluation, you genuinely don’t know:
❌ What type of hearing loss you have

Hearing loss and depression are more connected than most people realize.

When someone can’t follow a conversation at the dinner table, they stop talking as much. When a restaurant becomes too hard to navigate, they stop going out. When they keep mishearing things and feel embarrassed, they start staying home. It’s not that they don’t want to be around people — it’s that hearing loss made being around people feel harder than being alone.

That social withdrawal leads to loneliness. And loneliness is one of the strongest drivers of depression.

The research backs this up:

If you wake up and can't hear out of one ear — please don't assume it's just earwax or congestion and wait for it to pass. ⚠️

Sudden hearing loss in one ear can be a medical emergency called Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSHL) — and there is a 14-day window to treat it. After that window closes, the damage can become permanent.

Most people never knew this existed. They wait a week thinking it will clear up. Sometimes it does. But for the patients it doesn't — those days of waiting are the difference between recovery and permanent hearing loss.

Go get evaluated. Same day if possible.

Watch for:
🔊 Sudden hearing loss in one ear — especially when you wake up
🔊 Feeling of fullness or pressure in one ear
🔊 New ringing that appeared at the same time as the hearing change
🔊 One ear clearly worse than the other
