When something doesn't go the way we expected, our first reaction can be pretty strong. We may feel angry, disappointed, anxious, hurt, or simply overwhelmed. Before reacting, take a moment to notice what you're feeling, name it, and give it a number from 1–10. "I'm angry, and I'm at an 8." "I'm disappointed, and I'm at a 6." Putting a name and a number to what we're feeling can help us recognize just how high our emotional temperature is. If you're at an 8 or 9, it may not be the best time to have the conversation, send the text, or make the decision. Pause, take a breath, step away if you need to, and give yourself some time. The goal isn't to make the feeling disappear. It's to take the temperature down enough that you can respond thoughtfully rather than react from the intensity of the moment.
