The first Concert in the Park of the summer will take place Thursday, June 4, at Ilgenfritz Parking Lot on Park Avenue between Third and Fourth streets in downtown Fremont.

This temporary location is being utilized for MainStreet of Fremont's concert series due to the ongoing construction at John C. Fremont Park.

This week's band is High Heel. Now in their 20th year, High Heel is a high-energy cover band from Omaha by Lisa Larsen. They deliver an interactive, family-friendly show featuring classic rock, pop, and country favorites.

Kids activities, provided by Fremont Family YMCA, will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the music to follow from 7-9 p.m. Food trucks will be on site. Admission is free.

With this year's temporary change, MainStreet of Fremont encourages guests to take advantage of the many downtown parking lots and make an evening of it by shopping, dining, or stopping for a drink at one of the surrounding downtown businesses before the concert begins.

Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating during the performance.

I was driving to work when I heard a cover of Don Henley’s “The Boys of Summer” on the radio. It got me thinking, holy cow – Summer Reading Program is less than a week away!

The kick-off parties are scheduled for Friday, May 22, (for the kids) and Thursday, May 28, (for the grown-ups).

On May 22, our young readers can expect face painting by Gallery 92 West, a bounce house (weather permitting) courtesy of Parks & Rec, life-sized games from the Fremont Family Coalition and cookies sponsored by the Friends of Keene Memorial Library.

On May 28, we’ll have craft stations set up for the grown-ups, along with snacks and book-themed mocktails (The Great Mintsby and Twenty Thousand Leagues) from Backyard Casual Catering.

We’ll have our Monday special performers — this year we open the series with Wildlife Encounters on Monday, June 1, at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and a special evening show at 6:30 p.m. Other presentations will feature Stomp Chomp Roar (think dinosaurs), Big Trucks in the Parking Lot (thanks to Christensen Field for letting us “crash"), Jeff Quinn Magic Show, and a visit with staff from the Henry Doorly Zoo.

Out and About Storytime will head around town on Tuesday mornings at 10 a.m. — loads of new places to explore this year like a virtual tour of Morrill Hall, the indoor horse arena, and the City Council Chambers!

We’ll host a Tea-Rex Party where participants can learn the difference between tea-party etiquette and dinosaur etiquette. (Did dinos actually practice etiquette?) We’ll also have a Jurassic Park Trivia night for ages 12 and up — round up your team and see how well you paid attention to the movie!

There will be fun for adults, too — craft programs, book discussions, and more — but I am just about out of room for this edition. Stay tuned for more details in future columns.

The official Summer Reading Program start date is Monday, May 18, when you can start logging your reading. We’re asking folks to read at least 30 days this summer to complete the program and be eligible to enter the grand prize drawing of your choice.

Whether you decide to pick up “Dungeon Crawler Carl” (the science fiction series that’s been recommended by at least five of my friends) or check out some historical fiction in celebration of America 250, we hope you’ll Unearth a Story with us!
