I am posting this as the owner of Shiloh Place Assisted Living and Adult Day Services. I have had the privilege of serving an amazing but vulnerable population in the city of Fremont for nearly 13 years and have also given my entire adult life to this ministry.
Unfortunately, the Dept of Health and Human Services, where most of the funding comes from for clients to attend our Day Program, is systematically and intentionally cutting funding.
Our clients depend on our Program for their day to day structure, peer-socialization, and activities; for some, we provide their only meal of the day. Most clients rely on us for things such as scheduling physician appointments/transportation, medication assistance/management, assistance and classes regarding their multiple diagnosis, etc. Some, if not most, have been our clients for 10+ years, 5 days/week.
However, DHHS is finding that suddenly, they have “no need” for our services.
I feel compelled to inform the community because you have a right to know, if not as concerned citizens, simply as taxpayers. Already we are seeing those who have been denied services or had their attendance with our Program cut from 5 days/week to 3 days, cycling in/out of the hospital due to various issues.
The difference in the cost to attend our Program vs the hospital: $25/day (Shiloh Center) $10,000/day (hospital) – Yes, I said: $10,000.
I have and will continue to fight via appealing these denials but the atmosphere amongst those (whom I have come across) at DHHS is highly prejudicial against our population or any with disabilities. Meaning, we are unlikely to win.
I have also reached out to Sen. Ricketts and Congressman Flood and every Fremont City Councilperson (to no avail thus far, I might add).
Now, I am informing you.
If you agree that the funding for Shiloh Center clients should not be cut, call Pamela Kerns: DHHS Program Manager for Adult Day Programs, PH: 402-471-3651 or email her at: [email protected]
I do not know that she is the best person to contact but she’s a good start.
Thank you on behalf of all Shiloh Center & Assisted Living clients!
