Did you know most parents use a powerful language-teaching tool hundreds of times a week — without ever being taught it?
It's called a recast. Your child says "I scared," you respond "You were scared!" You're not correcting them — you're reflecting their meaning back in a fuller, more grammatical form, right in the flow of conversation.
SLPs have recommended recasting to families for decades, backed by research showing it helps children acquire grammar. But there's always been a paradox in that advice. A landmark 2001 study by Proctor-Williams, Fey, and Loeb dug into exactly that tension — and what they found has real implications for how we coach parents in language intervention today.
