Sunglasses do more than complete your summer look, they play an important role in protecting your eyes from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.

Too much UV exposure over time may increase the risk of cataracts, macular degeneration, photokeratitis (“sunburn” of the eye), and other eye health concerns. When shopping for sunglasses, look for lenses that block 100% of both UVA and UVB rays for the best protection.

Quality sunglasses can also help reduce glare, improve visual comfort, and make outdoor activities easier on your eyes during bright summer days.

June is Cataract Awareness Month, and it’s the perfect time to talk about one of the most common vision changes that happens as we age.

Cataracts usually develop slowly over time. You may notice more glare while driving, colors looking dull, trouble reading in dim light, or feeling like your glasses just aren’t helping the way they used to.

Healthy habits can help protect your eyes over time, including wearing UV-blocking sunglasses, eating a nutrient-rich diet, and keeping up with regular eye exams.

Awareness is the first step to protecting your sight.

Spending more time outdoors this season?

Sun exposure, wind, sand, chlorine, and saltwater can all irritate your eyes and increase the risk of UV-related eye damage without proper protection. Long-term UV exposure may contribute to conditions like cataracts and other vision concerns over time.

Keep your eyes healthy this summer by:
🕶️ Wearing sunglasses with 100% UV protection
🏖️ Rinsing your eyes after swimming
💧 Staying hydrated to support healthy tears
👒 Wearing a hat outdoors for added sun protection

Protect your vision while enjoying all your favorite summer activities!

Congratulations to all the students who graduated or completed another year of studies! This is a great time to reset, recharge, and get ready for what’s next.

With classes out, many families finally have a chance to catch up on appointments that are harder to fit in during the year. For nearsighted children, summer can be a helpful time to talk about myopia management and ways to help slow prescription changes.

Appointments tend to fill up quickly as the end of summer gets closer, so planning ahead can make things easier.

Call Capitol Eye Care Center at 510-791-5272 to schedule your or your child’s eye exam.
