Your dentist might catch what your doctor missed. Sleep apnea is wildly underdiagnosed—and the dental signs show up first. Gum disease that won’t quit. Tongue indentations. Weak enamel. Grinding at night.

But most people don’t connect the dots. They think they’re just tired. They think snoring is normal.

Untreated sleep apnea kills. High blood pressure. Heart attacks. Strokes. But it’s also one of the most treatable conditions we have.

Look for these warning signs and discuss them with your doctor: chronic snoring, waking up gasping, exhaustion despite sleep, morning headaches, brain fog, high blood pressure, teeth grinding, tongue indentations, unexplained sleepiness, dry mouth upon waking, irritability, acid reflux, excess weight.

If you recognize yourself, get screened.

Another incredible experience at the annual California Dental Association convention one of my favorite parts of dentistry is staying at the forefront of innovation so I can continue bringing the best technology, education, and patient care back to my practice.

One of the biggest highlights for me was seeing the advancements from Perimetrics and learning more about their groundbreaking crack detection technology. It was especially inspiring meeting Dr. Cherilyn Sheets innovator, USC Clinical Professor, and co-founder behind this technology. Hearing how her real world frustrations in dentistry helped spark the creation of this innovation was truly powerful.

I also loved taking courses on AI and innovation in dentistry and learning more from Dr Dar Radfar about sleep apnea and airway health something so commonly missed, yet deeply connected to heart attacks, strokes, fatigue, inflammation, and overall systemic health. These conversations are incredibly important because many patients remain undiagnosed for years.

Walking the exhibit floor and seeing the latest technology, diagnostics, materials, and innovations always reminds me how important it is that we as dentists continue learning and evolving for our patients. Dentistry is changing rapidly, and education matters.

And of course… one of the best parts was reconnecting with my amazing dental community and seeing my fellow Guiding Leaders peeps 💙 Plus getting to watch fellow dentist and comedian Dr Brady Smith perform live was definitely a convention highlight 😂

Excited for the future of dentistry, AI, innovation, airway health, and bringing these advances back to patient care.
