Report the injury to your supervisor right away, ask for Form CA-16 before you seek treatment (you have the right to choose your own doctor), and file Form CA-1 at ecomp.dol.gov within 30 days. Miss a step and your claim can stall.

Here's something OWCP won't go out of its way to tell you: you get to pick the first physician who treats your work injury. Treatment, surgery, supplies, and even travel to get care are covered. But changing doctors after that first choice requires OWCP approval, so it pays to choose a provider who knows the federal system from day one.
