Veterans Home of California - Fresno

Veterans Home of California - Fresno The Veterans Home of California-Fresno is a 300-bed, long-term care facility located on 27 acres in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley.

Opened in October 2013, the VHC-Fresno has 300 beds and presently offers Residential Care Facility for the Elderly (RCFE), also known as assisted living. Early next year the Home will also offer Skilled Nursing. The two levels of care will provide continuity in the lives of residents in a homelike atmosphere of dignity and respect. All healthcare needs, meals, transportation and activities are pro

vided by the Veterans Home of California-Fresno. Residents in the assisted living care area are required to need minimal assistance and supervision with most activities of daily living. Licensed nurses are available at the Home for necessary care. Skilled nursing care is provided to residents on a 24-hour basis by licensed nurses and certified nursing assistants. Skilled nursing residents have greater access to rehabilitation therapies, nursing care, pharmacy management, structured activities and clinical dietary services. A memory care program with this level of care provides a supervised environment for veterans with symptoms of confusion, memory loss, difficulty making decisions, solving problems or participating in conversations. The Veterans Home provides California veterans with a living environment that protects their dignity and contributes to their feeling of self-reliance and self-worth. The nearby City of Fresno offers many cultural and educational opportunities for Home residents to enjoy. Veterans considering assisted living are encouraged to apply. To qualify, you must be a resident of California, age 55 or older (or younger if disabled), and have served honorably. Spouses are also eligible to apply with the Veterans.

Once again, the staff at the Veterans Home of California-Fresno rolled up their sleeves to help support the community blood supply. Summertime is especially challenging for the blood supply. What makes this donation sweeter is everyone receives a pint of ice cream!

Our very own veteran, 100-year-old John Sepetjian, had the honor of representing the Veterans Home of California-Fresno at the 4th of July Fresno Grizzlies game, by throwing out the first pitch. The baseball stadium was filled with people cheering him on. It was quite the memorable experience for John and his family. On hand to watch were his two sons, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was also greeted by Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer and Clovis Mayor Vong Mouanoutoua.

The 4th of July activities at the veterans Home of California-Fresno started with a fly over. Two ex military planes, a Ryan L-1B, the silver plane and a Cessna O-1A Bird Dog, the green plane, were flown over the Fresno Home by two Army Veterans. These planes were active during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. We gathered together more than 50 residents in the back of the facility to wave and say thank you.
After the flyover, everyone headed inside to the dining room to enjoy a concert from Country Music artist John Pemberton.
After lunch, the Central California Veterans Home Support Foundation hosted an Ice Cream Social for our residents, their families and our staff.
All-in-all it was a great way to celebrate our Nation’s 250th Birthday!

For their final performance of the season, the Choir of the Valley chose to perform a Patriotic Concert for the residents at the Veterans Home of California-Fresno. This is by far the largest choir we’ve had performing at the Fresno Home. Dressed in red, white and blue, these choir members sang their hearts out for our veterans. This is definitely one performance our group looks forward to every year.

We all know how hot it has been lately. So last week our staff took a group of veterans from our skilled nursing unit to Pismo Beach for a day of fun in the sun. They spent their time strolling around the pier, enjoyIng the cool beach weather and even had lobster rolls for lunch. It was a nice escape from the heat.

Nothing says Father’s Day like a Western style barbecue. Residents in the Skilled Nursing Unit at the Veterans Home of California-Fresno, enjoyed barbecue ribs with delicious sides as part of their Father’s Day celebration. They also enjoyed an ice cold beer to wash it all down. They play a Father’s Day trivia game and even had a raffle. On behalf of everyone at the Fresno Home we wish everyone a wonderful Father’s Day.

Artist Pamela Alderman visited the Veterans Home of California-Fresno, to host a special project with our residents. She brought paint and clear tiles for them to create Patriotic images. She is then going to put the tiles together in one large frame to display at the Home to commemorate the nations 250th birthday. It was a unique event for residents from all levels of care. We are looking forward to seeing the project come together.

We celebrated Father’s Day a few days early at the Veterans Home of California-Fresno with a Brews & Bites event. Our veterans enjoyed pub food along with their favorite beer or wine and we even raffled off some gift cards to a few lucky residents. To all the dads out there, Happy Father’s Day!

In honor of Mother’s Day, the Activities Team at the veterans Home of California-Fresno hosted a lovely brunch for our ladies. They enjoyed delicious food, sipped sparkling cider, created floral arrangements, and received some cosmetics. We hope everyone had a blessed Mother’s Day and felt special.
