Communication is most meaningful when it has a purpose!

In this session, Danielle is using a swing to create natural opportunities for communication. This client learned that saying “go” gets the swing moving and saying “stop” makes it stop; real words with real meaning! You can also see Danielle using anticipatory waiting by pausing and giving the client time to finish her sentences. Those few extra seconds helped him successfully communicate again and again while having so much fun.

This client primarily communicates through sign language and his AAC device, both of which are highly effective forms of communication for him. In recent sessions, I have observed an increased interest in verbal communication, as he has begun attempting to imitate words that are modeled for him. Following his lead, I have incorporated verbal speech opportunities into our sessions while continuing to support his multimodal communication approach. He has been highly motivated and enthusiastic about learning new words, and it has been wonderful to see his excitement and confidence grow as he expands his communication skills.

✨ Communication grows best when children feel safe, heard, and not pressured.

Modeling without expectations means we show language during play and daily routines without requiring a child to repeat or respond right away. When we reduce pressure, we often decrease frustration and create more opportunities for genuine communication.

Whether you’re using spoken words, signs, AAC, gestures, or all of the above, consistent modeling helps children learn that communication is meaningful, fun, and empowering. 🤍

Instead of “say it,” try:
• Narrating what you’re doing
• Modeling simple words/phrases
• Pausing to give them time
• Responding to all communication attempts
