Behind every caring hand at Village at the Harbor and Village at Home is a caregiver who has completed hours of training. In Washington State, caregivers must become certified Home Care Aides (HCAs). That means completing a state-approved training and passing a certification exam.

Maintaining an HCA certification takes work every year. Our HCAs complete 12 hours of continuing education to keep their skills sharp and stay current on best practices in caregiving.

Healthcare doesn't stand still. New techniques, safety standards, and approaches to dementia care, mobility support, and person-centered care are always evolving, and our caregivers are committed to evolving with them.

Most people make it here for the first time on someone else's behalf. A daughter over from the mainland for the weekend to check on her mother. A husband who has been managing on his own a lot longer than he should have been. It isn't an easy walk. It's sometimes perceived as losing freedom. It's actually about getting your freedom back. It's having the help you need to live the life you're still capable of having surrounded by people who care about you.

Village at the Harbor is 36 rooms on Spring Street. That's small, and it shows. A lot of our team have been here five years or more, so the person helping you in the morning is the same person who helped you last spring. Somebody keeps the bird feeder outside the window filled, and there are raised beds along the walk that people fuss over all summer.

What we provide is assisted living, which means housing plus meals, housekeeping and laundry, activities, and help with the daily things that get harder — bathing, dressing, getting around, managing medications. How much help is worked out with each resident, and residents decide what they want and what they'd rather do themselves. It's their home. We're staff in it.

Two of the people running the building are registered nurses. Hospice and home health agencies come in when a resident needs them, and families can bring in their own caregivers on top of what we do. That layering matters more than it sounds like it does. It's the reason many of our residents are able to stay in their own room here rather than being moved to the mainland.

There's a walkway straight over to the Mullis Center, and two vans, one of them wheelchair accessible, that get people out to things.

We're the only assisted living community in San Juan County. That makes it worth starting the conversation before you need it. Call, ask questions, come walk through the building, even if the answer for now is "not yet." We'd rather know you're out there.

The hydrangeas are having a good year! Our garden is so gorgeous this time of year. The lavender is going, the roses are still hanging in there, and the trees have finally leafed out enough to give real shade. Residents have been out in it most afternoons this month.

Mostly what happens out there is people sit and talk. Pull up a chair under one of the umbrellas on the patio and you're in a conversation, whether you meant to be or not. Somebody's dog finds the coolest patch of concrete. A few folks take the path around and look at what's blooming. Nobody's running an activity. It's just a nice place to be in the summer.

We've put some work into making it easier to get out there. The patio door was replaced with an accessible one, and the garden and the barbecue have both had attention over the last couple of years. Small things, but they're the difference between going outside and thinking about going outside.

Village at the Harbor is a 36-room assisted living community on Spring Street in Friday Harbor, operated by San Juan County Public Hospital District No. 1. It's the only assisted living in San Juan County, and the District bought it in 2022 so it would stay here.

Wildfire smoke is drifting across Washington again, and even when the fires themselves are far away, we tend to feel it here. It's more than an unpleasant smell for some, especially anyone with heart or lung conditions. Aging lungs and hearts don't filter out fine smoke particles as well, so what's a mild annoyance for one person can turn into genuine breathing difficulty for another.

Here a few tips to help mitigate the effects of smoky days:
• stay indoors as much as you can
• keep windows and doors shut
• run an air purifier or air conditioner
• skip strenuous activity outside
• drink plenty of water

Keep an eye on how you're feeling and don't forget to check in on a neighbor who lives alone. If you have trouble breathing, chest pain or dizziness, call your doctor, or call 911 if it feels urgent.
