🎒 Back to School, Back to Balance: Tips for Parents, Teachers & Students! 🎒

August is here, which means early mornings, heavy backpacks, standing in classrooms, and wrestling toddlers into car seats during drop-off!

When back-to-school routines kick into high gear, our spines, hips, and pelvic floor often carry the extra weight. Here are three quick ergonomic tips from our therapy team to keep your body feeling good all season long:

1️⃣ Carrying Heavy Backpacks (Students & Parents)
Keep it close: The weight should rest close to the spine—never hanging down past the waist.

Use both straps: Single-strapping causes the spine to curve laterally, leading to shoulder and back strain.

Rule of 10-15%: A backpack shouldn't weigh more than 10–15% of the person's body weight. If your child is leaning forward to walk, it’s too heavy!

2️⃣ Standing All Day in Classrooms (Teachers & Staff)
Avoid the "Hip Drop": Shifting all your weight onto one hip strains the sacroiliac (SI) joint and pelvic floor muscles.

Unlock your knees: Micro-bend your knees to engage your core and leg muscles rather than dumping all your weight into your lower back.

Use a footrest: Keeping a small step stool under your desk lets you rest one foot at a time, taking pressure off your lower back while standing.

3️⃣ Lifting Toddlers into Car Seats (Parents & Caregivers)
Hugging, not reaching: Step into the car frame as close as possible instead of twisting and reaching with arms extended.

Pivot, don't twist: Turn your feet toward the car seat instead of twisting at your waist while holding extra weight.

Squat with your glutes: Bend at your knees and hips, engaging your core before you lift.

💡 Experiencing pelvic pain, back pain, or postural fatigue?
Pain during daily routines is common, but common doesn't mean normal! Whether you need physical therapy, pelvic floor rehabilitation, or speech therapy, our team at Gadsden Pelvic Rehab is here to support you and your family.

Tailbone (Coccyx) Pain Relief: Stop Sitting in Discomfort 🛋️💥

Is sit-down relief feeling completely out of reach? Whether from childbirth, an injury, repetitive strain, or long hours sitting, tailbone pain (coccydynia) can make everyday activities exhausting.

The good news: you don't have to live with it, and it usually isn’t something you just have to "wait out."

Why Does Your Tailbone Hurt?
The coccyx is attached to a complex network of pelvic floor muscles and ligaments. When these muscles become overly tight, pulled, or inflamed, they pull on the tailbone—causing sharp, lingering pain whenever you sit, stand up, or lean back.

How Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy Helps
Rather than just relying on a donut pillow, pelvic floor physical therapy targets the root cause:

Targeted Muscle Release: Hands-on manual therapy helps relax tight pelvic floor muscles pulling on the coccyx.

Postural Adjustments: Learn how to position your pelvis to take direct pressure off the bone while sitting and working.

Tailored Exercises: Gentle mobility work and stabilization exercises balance the surrounding hips and core to keep the pain from returning.

📍 Ready to sit comfortably again? Let’s work together on a pain-free plan.

Did you know that August is National Wellness & General Pelvic Health Month?🌸

When we think of "wellness," we usually think of eating well, getting enough sleep, or hitting our daily step goals. But there’s a critical component of core health that often gets left out of the conversation: pelvic health.

Your pelvic floor muscles act as a supportive hammock for your internal organs, directly impacting your bladder, bowel, and sexual health. Yet, so many people suffer through pain, leakage, or pressure believing it’s "just normal" after having children, during workouts, or as we age.

Here is the truth: Common does not mean normal.

This National Wellness Month, make pelvic health a non-negotiable part of your self-care routine:
✨ Listen to your body: Occasional leaks when coughing or sneezing? Persistent pelvic pain? Don't ignore the signals your body is sending you.
✨ Ditch the "just squeeze" routine: Kegels aren't a one-size-fits-all solution! Sometimes pelvic floor muscles are tight rather than weak, meaning extra squeezing can actually make symptoms worse.
✨ Prioritize proper breathing & posture: How you breathe and align your body daily has a direct impact on your core stability and pelvic floor function.

Investing in your pelvic health is one of the most empowering choices you can make for your overall quality of life and long-term mobility.

Whether you're recovering postpartum, navigating midlife changes, or simply looking to move without pain, specialized pelvic rehabilitation can help you get back to feeling like you.

"People keep asking me to repeat myself..." 🗣️

If you or a loved one living with Parkinson’s disease has noticed a softer, quieter, or raspy voice, you are not imagining it.

This condition is called hypophonia, and it’s very common with Parkinson’s. The trickiest part? Your brain's internal "volume meter" recalibrates, making you feel like you are shouting when you are actually speaking at a normal level. This can leave you feeling frustrated, left out of family conversations, or exhausted from constantly trying to project.

The good news: you can retrain your voice!

What is LSVT LOUD®?
LSVT LOUD® is an evidence-based speech therapy program specifically designed to help individuals with Parkinson’s disease regain a strong, clear, and confident voice.

Unlike general speech exercises, LSVT LOUD® focuses on a single, powerful concept: "Think Loud!"

How LSVT LOUD® Helps You Reclaim Your Voice:
Recalibrates Your Internal Volume: It trains your brain to accurately recognize how much effort is required to speak at a healthy, normal volume.

Strengthens Vocal Muscles: Through targeted daily exercises, it improves vocal cord closure, breath support, and articulation.

Restores Confidence: Whether you're ordering at a busy restaurant, talking on the phone, or chatting with grandkids, it gives you the tools to speak without constantly repeating yourself.

📍 Ready to bring your voice back to life?
Our certified speech-language pathologists are here to help you communicate clearly and confidently again!
