The school screening isn't enough to catch every problem with your child's vision.

A full exam goes further. We check how they see up close and far off, how well their eyes work together, and the health of the eye itself. A kid can pass the screening and still have something making reading harder than it should be. They rarely say "I can't see," so these problems often go unnoticed.

Summer's a good time to get them in. We're good with kids, and we keep it easy.

Summer break is the easiest time to get your child's eyes checked. No school schedule to work around, and you beat the rush that comes every August.

Without classes to miss, you're not pulling them out of anything, and there's no stress about fitting it in. And if your child does end up needing glasses, they'll have the whole rest of the break to get used to them, so they walk into the first day of school already comfortable and ready to see clearly.

4 things I can catch in an eye exam before you notice anything is wrong:

1- High blood pressure and diabetes. The blood vessels in your retina show early signs of both, sometimes before your doctor sees anything anywhere else.
2- Glaucoma. It has no early symptoms. None. By the time you notice your vision changing, the damage is already done, which is why catching it early matters so much.
3- Your kid's myopia getting worse. Kids rarely complain, they adapt. A yearly exam catches the progression while there's still time to slow it down.
4- Dry eye you've stopped feeling. When you've lived with discomfort long enough, it just becomes your normal. A lot of my patients don't realize it until we treat it.
