Tick Alert for Ohio!

If you've spent any time outdoors this spring, you've probably noticed—ticks are everywhere this year. Ohio is experiencing a surge in tick activity, and with it comes a rise in tick-borne illnesses like Lyme disease.

Here are some eye-opening statistics:
• Emergency room visits for tick bites were up more than 25% this April compared to last year
• Ohio Lyme disease cases skyrocketed nearly 1,000%—from just 40 cases in 2010 to over 2,800 in 2025
• Around half of Ohio ticks now carry Lyme disease

Prevention and early detection are key!

Head over to our blog where Dr. McKelvey breaks down everything you need to know about protecting yourself and your family this tick season.

What Is the UV Index?
The UV index is a standardized scale that measures the intensity of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun at a given place and time. It typically ranges from 0 to 11+, with higher numbers indicating stronger UV radiation and a greater potential for skin damage.
Here’s a simplified way to think about it:
0–2 (Low): Minimal risk
3–5 (Moderate): Some risk—protection recommended
6–7 (High): High risk—protection essential
8–10 (Very High): Very strong radiation—extra precautions needed
11+ (Extreme): Maximum risk—avoid direct sun exposure when possible

Final tip for avoiding skin cancer (thanks to the AADA).

Tip #5: Don't be afraid of self-tanner! These creams, mousses and lotions are much better than they used to be!

A self-tanner doesn't expose your skin to harmful UV rays. It also cannot protect your skin from harmful UV rays, so you want to continue to Practice Safe Sun.

Quick shout out to the American Academy of Dermatology Association for these helpful tips to avoid skin cancer! We're sharing number four today!

Tip #4: Don't get a "base tan"

Skip getting a base tan, as it cannot prevent sunburn.
Tanning is not a safe way to protect your skin from sunburn. Every time you tan, you damage your skin. As the damage builds up, you increase your risk of developing skin cancer.

Tip # 3 for avoiding skin cancer (our special series for Skin Cancer Awareness Month!)

Forget about indoor tanning.

Evidence from many studies has shown that using indoor tanning devices can increase the risk of developing melanoma and other skin cancers.

Indoor tanning devices include tanning beds, sun lamps, and tanning bulbs. All emit harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. The amount of the radiation produced during indoor tanning is similar to that of the sun, and in some cases might be stronger.

If you use or have used an indoor tanning device in the past, make an appointment to see a board-certified dermatologist (like us!), who can check your skin for signs of skin cancer. When found early, skin cancer is highly treatable.

We're back with Tip #2 for avoiding skin cancer:

Tip #2: Reapply sunscreen.
When outdoors, you want to reapply sunscreen:
- Every 2 hours
- After swimming
- After sweating
- After toweling off

It's essential to reapply because sunscreen wears off over time, which reduces its ability to protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays. You also want to reapply after swimming, sweating, or toweling off because each removes sunscreen from your skin.

This month, we have FIVE tips from the American Academy of Dermatology Association to help you avoid skin cancer!

Ready for tip #1?

Practice Safe Sun.
When you Practice Safe Sun, you reduce your risk for skin cancer and developing early signs of skin aging like deep wrinkles and age spots.

To Practice Safe Sun:
- Seek shade.
- Wear sun-protective clothing.
- Apply sunscreen (broad-spectrum, SPF 30 or higher, and water resistant) every time before going outdoors.

It's Skin Cancer Awareness month again! What does that mean??

This month is sponsored by the American Academy of Dermatology Association to help Americans learn:
- How to reduce your risk of developing skin cancer
- How to find skin cancer early when it's highly treatable
- The fact that people of all skin tones develop skin cancer

Why is Skin Cancer Awareness Month important?
It's estimated that every day about 9,500 people in the United States are diagnosed with skin cancer.

It's that time of year again... time for your annual skin check exam!

It's one more thing on a busy end of school year calendar, of course, but this one thing can save your life!

Did you know: early detection increases melanoma survival rates to approximately 99%. Studies show that professional skin checks can reduce melanoma-specific mortality by up to 59%.

Over 5.4 million non-melanoma skin cancers are treated annually in the U.S., making early, regular screening vital.
