Are some people born with an “addictive personality”?

For years, the term addictive personality has suggested that certain people are somehow predisposed to addiction because of who they are.

But new research tells a different story.

**There is no single personality type that defines addiction.

Genetics, trauma, mental health, environment, and life experiences all play a role. Some people use substances to feel good. Others use them to stop feeling bad.

And perhaps most importantly, the behaviors someone exhibits during active addiction do not define who they are.
