Have you ever told yourself, “I know exactly why I do this… so why am I still doing it?” You’re not alone.

Many relationship patterns are deeply wired into the nervous system. They formed through years of adapting to family dynamics, cultural expectations, and the roles you had to play to stay safe or connected. By adulthood, these patterns feel automatic even when you understand them.

Insight is powerful, but it doesn’t automatically rewrite the body’s learned responses. Real change happens when you learn to work with your nervous system, not against it.

In my latest blog, I talk about why these patterns feel so strong and share practical ways to move from awareness into lasting change.

Many people stay in relationships longer than they want to because they’re waiting for their feelings to change first.
Waiting to stop loving someone.
Waiting to stop missing them.
Waiting to feel “ready.”

But feelings don’t always disappear on the same timeline as your values.
You can still love someone and know the relationship isn’t right for you.
You can miss someone and still choose what supports your growth.

Missing someone doesn’t mean you should be with them — it means you’re adjusting to change.
Your feelings don’t have to vanish before you choose what’s best for you.

If this resonates, I wrote a full blog about it here: https://www.jenelleashley.com/choosing-yourself-even-when-you-still-love-them/

Happy Monday. 🌿 If you are starting this week feeling completely stuck, anxious, or emotionally overloaded behind a strong, highly responsible exterior (and armor!), you are not alone.

Many of the adults I work with are exceptionally driven, but internally they are running completely on empty from trying to maintain constant control over their daily lives just to avoid deep emotional pain or past rejection.

When your nervous system has been stuck in "go-mode" for years, you cannot simply force yourself to suddenly relax. Healing requires small, repeatable shifts to show your body that it is safe to slow down.

Try these two practical tools to help your system safely settle today:

🌀 SHIFT TO OBSERVING MODE
The next time you feel your body tense up or want to take total control over a minor mistake, pause and mentally say to yourself: "I am noticing that my mind is playing the perfectionism tape right now." That's it no evaluation. Changing your language creates a small bit of mental distance that stops the overthinking loop from taking over your afternoon.

🌿 PRACTICE DECELERATION
Choose one ordinary daily task like drinking your morning coffee or washing your hands and do it at half-speed for just 60 seconds. Pay complete attention to the physical sensations around you. These small physical anchors send a direct safety signal to your brain stem, gently pulling your nervous system back into the peaceful present.

Exhausted from trying to have control? 🕒

Behind your professional success, academic drive, or polished exterior, it can feel like an endless battle to keep your true thoughts and feelings hidden. When we focus completely on avoiding our pain or preventing discomfort, we build invisible walls that end up keeping us trapped in loops of chronic stress, anxiety, and self-doubt. 🌀

You do not have to carry this heavy weight alone anymore. Therapy offers a calm, supportive, and culturally responsive space to let down your guard, stop running, and just breathe. 🌿

I am a Gainesville-based therapist also providing mental health counseling for adults in Jacksonville and throughout the state of Florida. 💻

Let's map out your path to peace together. ✨
