Self-care isn't selfish—it's an important part of living well with arthritis and autoimmune disease.

Living with arthritis or an autoimmune disease means self-care is more than an occasional treat—it's an important part of managing your health.

This year's International Self-Care Day theme, "Self-Care at the Forefront of Prevention," reminds us that the choices we make each day can support our overall health and complement the care we receive from our rheumatology team.

As you head into the weekend, consider making time to:

✨ Move your body with gentle exercise or stretching.
💧 Stay hydrated.
🥗 Eat nourishing foods.
😴 Prioritize quality sleep.
🧘 Practice stress through mindfulness, prayer, meditation, or deep breathing.
💊 Take medications as prescribed.
❤️ Listen to your body and allow yourself to rest when needed.

Self-care doesn't replace your treatment plan—it works alongside it. Small, consistent habits can make a meaningful difference in supporting your health and well-being.

This weekend is the perfect opportunity to reset, recharge, and take one small step toward caring for yourself.

Wishing you a healthy, restful weekend from all of us at Arthritis Center of North Georgia.

Sjögren's disease is one of the most common autoimmune rheumatic diseases, yet it remains widely misunderstood.

While many people associate Sjögren's with dry eyes and dry mouth, it is much more than that. Sjögren's is a serious, systemic autoimmune disease that can affect the joints, lungs, kidneys, nerves, and other organs, impacting nearly every aspect of daily life. Early recognition and treatment can help improve quality of life and reduce the risk of complications.

Today, we join the Sjögren's Foundation in raising awareness, supporting those living with Sjögren's disease, and encouraging conversations that lead to earlier diagnosis and better understanding.

Today, we recognize World Scleroderma Day and stand with patients, families, caregivers, and advocates raising awareness for this rare autoimmune disease.

Scleroderma can affect the skin, blood vessels, joints, and internal organs, and symptoms may vary widely from person to person. Greater awareness helps support earlier recognition, timely evaluation, and compassionate care for those living with this complex condition.

At Arthritis Center of North Georgia, we support continued education, understanding, and research for patients affected by scleroderma and other autoimmune diseases.

Summer reminder for rheumatology patients: some autoimmune conditions and certain medications can make your skin more sensitive to the sun.

This is called photosensitivity, and it may increase your risk of sunburn, rash, or skin irritation after UV exposure. Certain arthritis and autoimmune medications, including some DMARDs, NSAIDs, immunosuppressive medications, antibiotics, and biologics, may contribute to sun sensitivity. Conditions like lupus can also be triggered or worsened by sun exposure.

Before spending time outdoors:

☀️ Use broad-spectrum sunscreen
☀️ Reapply often, especially after sweating or swimming
☀️ Seek shade when possible
☀️ Wear protective clothing, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat
☀️ Avoid tanning beds
☀️ Ask your provider or pharmacist if your medication may increase sun sensitivity

Enjoy the sunshine — safely.

Men’s Health Month is a great time to talk about something many men overlook: bone health.

Osteoporosis and bone loss can affect men, especially with age, inflammatory arthritis, autoimmune disease, long-term steroid use, low vitamin D, low testosterone, smoking, or certain medications.

For rheumatology patients, protecting bone strength is part of whole-body care. Ask your provider about vitamin D, calcium, safe movement, fall prevention, and whether a bone density scan may be right for you.

Bone health matters at every age.
