Weekly Article November 1st: Recognizing and Modifying Environmental Factors to Support Gifted Students’ Sensory Processing in the School Environment.

Per the abstract, this study explored how environmental and sensory accommodations informed by occupational therapy (OT) can support the unique sensory processing needs of children in classroom settings. The findings highlight that sensory-inclusive strategies, such as minimizing visual overstimulation, integrating sensory tools, and providing structured sensory experiences, may improve students’ emotional regulation, attention, and overall learning outcomes. Through collaboration with teachers and modifying both the social and physical environments, OT interventions aimed to create a more supportive school setting for students with sensory sensitivities. This approach highlights the importance of sensory-informed accommodations as a complementary strategy to traditional educational supports, reinforcing the role of OT in promoting sustainable, school-wide inclusion practices.

As of October 1, Cigna implemented a new site-of-care policy requiring hospital outpatient departments (HOPDs) to obtain authorization for OT and PT services following an initial evaluation.

They’ll approve HOPD-based therapy only when there’s a clear medical necessity—for instance:
• Need for specialized equipment
• Need for specialized personnel
• Geographic limitations exist
• Complex clinical conditions

As providers adjust to these new requirements, it is important to recognize that similar policies may become more widespread across other payers in the future. Find more info: https://bit.ly/48EVfG5

AOTA is actively engaged and advocating for policies that support access to occupational therapy services across settings.

Today is ! 🌍

Established in 2010 by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT), World OT Day elevates the visibility of our profession's development work and promotes WFOT's activities locally, nationally, and internationally. This year's theme is 'Occupational Therapy in Action'—celebrating how OTs worldwide help people engage in meaningful activities and participation every single day.

At AOTF, we're proud to support WFOT's commitment to representing our profession on the global stage. We're so excited to connect with OT professionals from around the world at the WFOT Congress in Bangkok, Thailand in Winter 2026!
