Stigma is a version of shaming in my view. If a person is grappling with the impacts of addiction, it seems to me that the 1st job of any caregiver is to demonstrate COMPASSION, not contempt. This is a chronic disease frequently treated as acute. This has to change right here & right now!

When health care providers demonize people addicted to drugs or alcohol, it just makes the problem worse

Opioid deaths play 2nd fiddle to COVID-19. Despite increases in the former, little emphasis on overdoses gets the attention warranted.

Suspected overdoses jumped 42 percent in May, data obtained by Post shows. Fueling the surge are isolation, economic devastation and disruptions to the drug trade.
