Bibliotherapy Sundays: Wally & Freya A Restorative Justice Book

Calling all school social workers, counselors, psychologists and teachers!!! This is my FAVORITE restorative justice book!

Wally and Freya is about a friend who harms his classmates by destroying his work. Then Wally helps Freya to repair that harm.

This book is a fantastic example of repair harm made and an introduction to restorative justice or restorative conversations.

Do you have a good restorative conversation book?

Social Work merch…

I am a sucker for merch, especially cute merch that pertains to me. I especially love merch that is social work or mindfulness themed.

And currently, all my social worker merch is cold weather based because of living in NY. So I was so excited when it was a chilly 63° in Georgia so I could wear one!

This one is from Bella and Oak on etsy and it’s one of my favorites!

If you are a creator who makes mindfulness or social work merch, let’s connect because I have ideas!

A haunted house except it’s…

3 cancellations in one week 🙃

Being asked how long it will take to see progress in behavior…

Requests to make slime in child lead sessions 🤮

Being told that they have the same symptoms as someone they found on Google or TikTok 🤦🏼‍♀️

And last, but certainly not least… it’s a full moon happening the same week as Halloween 🎃 👻😳

This or That Therapist Edition 🩷

Today I mixed in my therapist preferences with my preferences as a child therapist.

Do any of these ring true for you too?

Let’s reframe the things we say to kids!

Have you caught yourself saying “stop being angry” or “you need to calm down” or something similar?

When kids are angry, or feeling a different big emotion and show it through anger, they aren’t able to process what you are saying and struggle to use a coping skill on their own.

So when we say “your body is telling me you are angry, let’s take a deep breath together” we are validating them, helping them identify the cues in their body, and engaging them in co-regulation.

Behavior IS communication.

We need to stop expecting kids to be able to put into words how they are feeling. Because even as adults, sometimes we can’t put it into words.

We need to use their language. We need to look for the underlying need that is communicating the behavior. We need to use play to help them sort out their emotions.

This is a lot of what I do in my practice and I can help you with it! DM me more for info!

Happy Mindfulness Monday!

Do you know the science behind deep breathing? Deep breathing helps your nervous system but activating the vagus nerve and pushing your nervous system away from fight or flight and towards rest and digest.

Teaching deep breathing activities to children that are play based in therapy helps them to apply the skill when they are stressed. But sometimes an adult needs to co-regulate with them.

There are so many breathing tools you can use to help co-regulate with your child. And I am happy to share them with you!

Bibliotherapy Sundays: My Fuzzy Feelings by Cara Jenkins

Today we are talking about my last of my worry books, My Fuzzy Feelings. This is another great worry or emotion book for little kids, ages 3-6 specifically.

Kids like this one because it’s fuzzy texture, the mouth is open so they can put worries inside of it, and it’s a relatable story.

I use this to introduce feelings or do an activity where the monster eats the worry or other activities.

Be sure to stay tuned for some other children’s books that you need for your kids or your children therapy practice!

Attention Apples to Apples lovers or What Do You Meme lovers…

I did a version of this game virtually this week, and my older kids LOVED it!

If you have Zoom Pro (or another platform with a whiteboard feature), you can create post it’s with words or themes on them. Then have kids go into the stickers and over to the GIFs. I had them pick the GIF that they felt best represented the word or theme that was on the sticky note.

We did works like grumpy, sad, excited, silly, and themes like Halloween, fall, back to school. We giggled a ton, we built our emotional vocabulary, and I was able to see how they represent their emotions with GIFs.

It was a great activity!

Reasons why I don’t make a child clean up after an in person session:

1. To let the child know that my acceptance isn’t based on compliance: requiring cleaning up can cause a power struggle or may communicate that I will only accept the child if they follow my request to clean up.

2. To prioritize their emotional regulation that they achieved during session: I use many play based approaches for emotional regulation during session. Not asking them to clean up allows them to maintain that obtained emotional regulation.

3. To respect their therapeutic process and to let them know I will carry the heavy stuff. By not making them clean up, I am sending the message of “I’ve got it, you can leave it here.”
