For decades, Dr. Maryann McCullough Nikander has helped people hear the voices, music, and everyday sounds they thought they'd lost. Today we celebrate her retirement, and everything she has given to this practice and to her patients along the way.

Ask anyone who has sat in her chair, and they'll tell you the same thing: she listens first. That's what made her exceptional, both as a clinician and as the kind of person patients trusted with something as personal as their hearing.

Thank you, Maryann, for every patient you helped reconnect with their life, and for the years you gave to this team. We are going to miss you around the office. Enjoy!

Keeping your hearing aids clean is one of the easiest ways to help them last. A few habits worth building into your routine: keep them dry with a desiccant when not in use, gently brush away debris and wax, check filters regularly, and wipe the outer casing with a dry microfiber cloth.

We also recommend a professional cleaning every six months to keep them performing at their best. Ask your provider at your next visit.

We wanted to share a wonderful story from a patient recently:

Dr. Pinello's father-in-law came to see her at our White Plains office for a hearing evaluation, and yes, that meant a family member walking him through his diagnosis. He said it made him more comfortable, not less.

Once he was finally fit with his new hearing aids, the first thing he noticed wasn't anything dramatic. It was the sound of leaves rustling in the trees outside, sounds he hadn't realized he'd stopped hearing. The next night, at a Washington Nationals game, he followed an entire conversation in a crowd for the first time in years.

We're so grateful to be part of moments like this. Thank you for trusting us, Craig, and congratulations on hearing the little things again!

White noise machines are everywhere, from nurseries to nightstands, but a few simple habits can make a big difference in how safe they are for your ears.

Audiologists recommend keeping the volume below 50 decibels, measured where your head rests (or your baby's crib), placing the machine at least seven feet away, and using a timer so it shuts off once you or your little one are asleep. Noise exposure adds up over time, even from sources that seem harmless.

Our CEO, Dr. Ross Cushing, was one of the audiologists featured in Parade's recent article on this topic. Worth a read if white noise is part of your nightly routine. and how to set safe volume limits: https://parade.com/health/healthy-habit-damaging-hearing-according-to-audiologists"

We're grateful every day to have Dr. Cindy Leeb on our Potomac team. Reviews like this from Joe P. are exactly why.

Her patients feel it when she takes the time to really listen and explain things clearly, and that kind of care is rare.

Thank you, Dr. Leeb, for everything you bring to Live Better Hearing + Balance!
