The US National Weather Service Houston-Galveston Texas has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Galveston Island through 6 a.m. Friday. Forecasters say that Galveston has a low chance of strong winds, heavy rain or flooding as Tropical Storm Bertha moves westward along the Gulf coastline.

Based on current forecasts, no disruptions to port operations are expected. The port will issue updates if the status changes.

It's a new era for Galveston cargo! Through June, roll-on/roll-off cargo at the Port of Galveston was up 46 percent compared to last year. Almost 289,000 tons of heavy agriculture and construction equipment moved across Galveston docks in the first half of the year. In addition, BMW, Mini Coopers and Rolls-Royce new car imports were up 3.6 percent through June 2026.

In this week's port column, Port Director and CEO Rodger E. Rees discusses port studies to analyze mobility and economic impacts of port growth, including a proposed 5th cruise terminal at Pier 14. A traffic study shows minimal impacts from a new terminal.
