Today our Galveston Clubhouse members discussed STRESS.
First, they listed examples of the two kinds of stress.

Acute Stress
(short-term, immediate pressure):
-being on time
-seeing someone you don't like
-finances

Chronic Stress
(long-term, ongoing pressure):
-finances
-kids
-relationships
-work responsibilities
-time schedules
-waking up early

Then, they answered two questions:

1) What is one healthy habit you use to manage stress?
-budgeting to pay bills on time
-listen to music
-exercise
-create a plan/schedule
-talking to someone I love
-forgiveness
-meditation
-therapy
-self-reflection
-acceptance

2) If you could talk to your stress, what would you say?
-go away
-stop
-leave me alone
-let's find a way to be constructive
-it is what it is
-I've had enough
-give me a break
-you're not welcome here
-don't make me exercise
-get out!

Our members hope you feel less stress today after reading this!

We're kicking off Women's History Month with an introduction to 5 women pioneers in mental health.

From the famous work of Anna Freud to the woman who was instrumental in starting the first Clubhouse, these ladies worked tirelessly to advocate for people living with mental illness. One woman even feigned illness to gain access inside a mental asylum so she could expose the horrific conditions and force meaningful change.

Clubhouse Members pulled together some info about taking medication for a mental health condition. Then we had an informed discussion about issues surrounding treatment by medication.

Our Members, along with our Nursing Students from UTMB, did a deep dive on HOPE. Here are their insights:

1. Where do you hold HOPE in your life and body, and what does it feel like?
-in my mind/head
-in my heart
-in the future/the unknown
-when I wake up and see pictures of my children
-what hope feels like: anxious, excited, free will, good, relief, stability, satisfaction, God's plan, scared of no control but looking forward to it, trust the process

2. Have you ever felt a situation was hopeless, if so, how did you navigate it?
-beginning a new semester (school)
-when I isolated
-when I don't have a place to live
-when experiencing loneliness
-navigated it by: taking medication, making new friends, connecting with family, staying on track, feeling included

3. What is one thing, big or small, that gives you HOPE today?
-my kids
-my faith
-seeing God in little ways in people
-housing
-medication and outpatient program
-thinking about a better future

To conclude Mental Health Awareness Month (January) our Clubhouse members answered some important questions last week:

1. Why is there a need for more awareness about Mental Illness?
-misunderstandings and myths
-to begin a solution and get help
-stigmas
-inaccurate and false stereotypes
-managing perceptions in the general population

2. What has to happen for the general opinion about Mental Illness to change?
-compassion
-accountability
-speak openly
-being believed
-support groups for families
-the economically advantaged become open about their struggles with Mental Illness

3. What must an individual DO to be more aware?
-get educated about MI
-notice first reactions in others
-stop judging
-see the human being and not just the behavior
-listen
-don't correct others
-pay attention to language
