Most people know their blood type, their food sensitivities, their cholesterol levels—but they have no idea what their spine looks like.

This is a massive gap in understanding your body and what it needs.

Take the 3 spines above for example. Let’s say we gave them all the general advice of ā€œpulling their shoulders back.ā€ Here’s what would happen:

🟔 (left spine) - this would overly flatten his upper back and further increase the stress and instability in his lower back.

šŸ”µ (middle spine) - this actually likely wouldn’t make them worse, but wouldn’t end up fixing anything.

šŸ”“ (right spine) - this would over extend her low back and place more demand in the neck. This would significantly increase mid to low back tightness and neck pain.

Understanding your spine is a piece of the puzzle you don’t want to miss. It’s like finally having the ā€œowner’s manualā€ for your own body. You move from being a passive observer of your pain to knowing exactly how to address it.

We’ve been sold a lie that posture is a position you ā€œholdā€ā€”chest out, shoulders back, chin up. That isn’t posture; that’s just your grandma yelling at you againšŸ‘µšŸ»

True posture is achieved when you have structural integrity without having to consciously think about it or ā€œholdā€ it.

To get there, you have to put in the reps. Here’s the blueprint:

1ļøāƒ£ Get the Data: You need a clear understanding of your unique alignment. Everyone’s body is different.

2ļøāƒ£ Get Stacked: Learn how to position your body so your joints are properly aligned.

3ļøāƒ£ Integrate: Take that ā€œstackedā€ position and put it into motion—hinging, rowing, pressing, and walking—in a way that fixes your specific imbalances.

4ļøāƒ£ Put in the Reps: Your body only holds on to what you make it hold on to!

Hip Hinge Progressions

1. Kneeling Rear Foot Elevated Hip Hinge
2. Standing Hip Hinge w/ Reach
3. Kettlebell Deadlift
4. Dynamic Single-Leg Hinge

Often times, back pain while bending forward comes from ā€œfoldingā€ at the spine instead of ā€œhingingā€ at the hips. These progressions train lumbopelvic dissociation to help your body use the right muscles instead of overloading the low back. Whether you’re lifting a toddler, working in the yard, or bending over the hood of a car — mastering this movement pattern can be the difference between going about your day without limitations and a potential overuse injury.

While this patient’s initial curve was mild, her family history and current stage of growth put her at a high risk for progression. Given her risk factors, being proactive was the best gift we could give her spine.
