☀️ It's hot out there, Garden City! Let's talk about staying safe when the temps climb.

Summer heat isn't just uncomfortable — it can turn dangerous fast, especially for kids, older adults, and anyone working or playing outside. Here's how to beat the heat:

🔴 Drink water before you're thirsty — thirst means you're already behind
🔴 Take breaks in the shade or AC, especially during peak heat (11am–4pm)
🔴 Wear light, loose-fitting clothing and don't skip the sunscreen
🔴 Never leave kids or pets in a parked car — not even for a minute
🔴 Know the warning signs of heat exhaustion: heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea, headache, and weakness

🚨 If someone stops sweating, has hot/dry skin, confusion, or a very high temperature — that's heat stroke, and it's a medical emergency. Call 911 right away.

☀️ Headed to the lake this weekend? We're jealous — but before you go, let's talk sunscreen!

A day on the water is one of the best parts of summer, but water and sun are a sneaky combination. The water reflects UV rays right back at you, which means you can burn faster at the lake than you would just sitting in your backyard. Don't let a bad sunburn be your souvenir!

Here's how to protect yourself and your family:

🧴 Use the right sunscreen — Look for broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher. SPF 50+ is even better for a full day outside.

⏰ Apply BEFORE you go outside — Put it on at least 15-20 minutes before sun exposure so it has time to absorb into the skin.

🔁 Reapply, reapply, reapply — Every 2 hours, and immediately after swimming or toweling off. Water washes it off even if it says water-resistant!

👒 Layer up your protection — Sunscreen is great, but so are hats, UV-protective clothing, and sunglasses. Cover those shoulders and the tops of your feet too — easy spots to forget!

🕐 Watch the clock — UV rays are strongest between 10am and 4pm. Take shade breaks during peak hours, especially with little ones.

🦟 Bug season is in full swing here in Garden City, and most bites are just a nuisance — but some need a little extra attention!

Most bug bites will itch, swell a bit, and clear up on their own within a few days. But here's when it's time to come see us at Integrate Family Health:

🔴 The redness, swelling, or warmth is spreading
🔴 You notice a bullseye-shaped rash (this can be a sign of Lyme disease)
🔴 The bite site looks infected — pus, increasing pain, or feels hot to the touch
🔴 You're running a fever, feeling achy, or unusually fatigued after a bite
🔴 You're having any trouble breathing or signs of an allergic reaction — call 911 for this one!
🔴 Your child got bitten and you're just not sure — trust your gut, we're always happy to take a look!

☀️ Summer in Southwest Kansas means swimming pools, lake days, and… swimmer's ear. Ouch!

If your kiddo (or you!) has been spending time in the water lately and your ear is starting to bother you, you might be dealing with swimmer's ear — an infection of the outer ear canal that's super common this time of year.

Here's how to tell it might be swimmer's ear:

👂 Pain or tenderness when you tug on your ear or push near the ear canal
👂 Itching inside the ear
👂 The ear feels full or muffled
👂 Drainage or discharge coming from the ear
👂 Increasing pain that's making it hard to sleep or focus

Swimmer's ear won't go away on its own — it needs treatment! The good news is it's very easy to treat when you catch it early. Our nurse practitioner Polly Elpers can get you in, take a look, and have you back in the pool before you know it.
