DIY Rainstick Using Chia Seeds
There are many beautiful rainsticks available on the market, but there’s something uniquely meaningful about creating one with your own hands.
This is the rainstick I built using very simple materials:
* A clear plastic wallpaper storage tube
* Chia seeds
* Bamboo toothpicks
* Soft yarn wrapped around the outside for a comfortable grip
The most important feature is the seed flow control system.
Inside the tube, at the position I’m pointing to in the photo, I installed a small plastic disc with a hole in the center. This simple component acts as the heart of the instrument.
* A smaller hole allows the chia seeds to fall more slowly, creating a long, gentle rainfall effect.
* A larger hole lets the seeds pass through more quickly, producing the sound of a heavier rain.
By simply changing the size of this opening, you can completely change the character of the rainstick.
I chose chia seeds because they are small, uniform in size, and produce a soft, delicate sound. As they travel through the maze of bamboo toothpicks, they create a smooth, natural rain texture without the harsher noise that larger seeds often produce.
The bamboo toothpicks are inserted in alternating directions to slow the movement of the seeds. This internal structure is what gives the instrument its depth and realism.
Finally, I wrapped the outside with yarn to improve grip, make the instrument more comfortable to hold, reduce handling noise, and give it a warm handcrafted appearance.
One of the things I love most about sound healing is that meaningful instruments don’t always have to be expensive. Sometimes, creativity, curiosity, and a little patience are all you need to create an instrument that carries your own personal signature.
