Anger Management. This week our in-jail program taught participants anger is a normal human emotion.

It’s not the anger that gets us into trouble—it’s what we do with it.

For many people in recovery, anger has become an automatic trigger for unhealthy decisions. In the heat of the moment, it’s easy to say something we don’t mean, act impulsively, or turn to old coping habits in an attempt to escape uncomfortable emotions.

One of the most important skills we teach is learning to notice anger before it takes control.

Anger doesn’t appear all at once. Our bodies often give us warning signs first:

* A racing heart
* Tightness in the chest
* Clenched fists or jaw
* Rapid breathing
* Feeling hot or tense

Learning to recognize these physical signals creates an opportunity to practice one of the most powerful tools in recovery:

The Pause.

That brief moment between feeling and reacting gives us the chance to breathe, step away if needed, gather our thoughts, and choose a response instead of acting on impulse.

Walking away isn’t weakness.

Taking a timeout isn’t avoidance.

Sometimes, it’s the strongest decision we can make.

Recovery isn’t about never feeling angry.

It’s about learning to respond with intention instead of reacting in the moment.

Because one intentional pause can prevent words we can’t take back, choices we can’t undo, and consequences that last far longer than the emotion itself.

Stress Management

Stress is a part of life.

Recovery doesn’t eliminate stress—it changes how we respond to it.

For many people, stress has become one of the strongest triggers for returning to old habits. Whether it’s a difficult phone call, financial pressure, relationship conflict, or simply feeling overwhelmed, our brains naturally look for the fastest way to find relief. For many, substances once became that escape.

One of the most important goals in treatment is learning that stress itself isn’t the enemy—our response to stress is what matters most.

In this week’s group, we explore healthy coping strategies that help reduce stress without creating new problems. Whether it’s going for a walk, exercising, talking with someone you trust, practicing mindfulness, or simply taking a moment to pause and breathe, these skills become powerful tools for long-term recovery.

Recovery isn’t about avoiding life’s challenges.

It’s about building the confidence to face them differently.

Every healthy choice strengthens resilience. Every healthy response rewires old patterns. And over time, those small decisions become lasting change.

Because the healthiest response to stress isn’t to escape it…

It’s learning that you already have the strength to move through it.

Thinking Errors

Our decisions rarely begin with an action.

They begin with a thought.

Thinking errors are automatic patterns of thinking that can quietly convince us to make choices that work against our goals. In recovery, these thoughts often sound reasonable in the moment—even when they lead us back toward old behaviors.

Some of the most common thinking errors include:

• “Just one won’t hurt.” (Minimizing the consequences)
• “I’ve had a stressful day—I deserve this.” (Justifying use as a reward or coping strategy)
• “I’ve been doing well. I can handle it this time.” (Overconfidence)
• “Everyone else is doing it.” (Rationalizing unhealthy choices based on others’ behavior)

The challenge is that these thoughts often happen so quickly that we don’t even recognize them before making a decision.

In treatment, we help participants slow down and examine the thoughts behind their actions. Through evidence-based counseling, clients learn to recognize distorted thinking, challenge unhealthy beliefs, and replace them with healthier, more balanced ways of responding to life’s challenges.

Recovery isn’t about having perfect thoughts.

It’s about learning to recognize the thoughts that no longer serve us—and choosing a different path.

Because lasting recovery begins long before the first drink or drug. It begins with changing the conversation happening in our own minds.

Understanding Triggers

When most people hear the word trigger, they think of certain people, places, or situations that make someone want to use drugs or alcohol.

But triggers go much deeper than that.

Often, it’s the emotions beneath the surface—grief, loneliness, stress, guilt, anger, shame, boredom, or fear—that create the urge to escape. Substance use can become a way of coping with emotions that feel overwhelming.

In treatment, we learn to recognize the difference between triggers we can avoid and triggers we must learn to manage. While we can’t always change life’s circumstances, we can develop healthier ways to respond to them.

Recovery isn’t about avoiding every difficult emotion—it’s about building the skills and confidence to move through those moments without returning to substance use.

At R.E.C. Treatment Center, we help participants identify their personal triggers, understand what drives them, and develop practical coping strategies that support lasting recovery.

Because lasting recovery begins when we stop running from our emotions and start learning how to face them.

Week 2 of Treatment inside Rockwall County Jail involves Intake & Assessment:
Every person’s recovery story is different—so every treatment journey should begin with understanding their story.

An intake is much more than filling out paperwork. It’s a conversation.

During this one-on-one meeting, we take time to learn about the person’s experiences, challenges, strengths, and goals. We talk about what brought them to treatment, what obstacles they face, and what they hope to accomplish moving forward.

This information helps us create a personalized treatment plan because there is no one-size-fits-all approach to recovery.

Just as importantly, the intake is where trust continues to grow. It gives participants an opportunity to be heard without judgment, ask questions, and begin building a relationship with their counselor.

At R.E.C. Treatment Center, we believe people are more than their mistakes or circumstances. We meet every individual where they are—with compassion, dignity, and unconditional positive regard.

Because meaningful recovery begins when someone finally feels understood.

This Independence Day, we celebrate a freedom that goes beyond fireworks.

Freedom from addiction.
Freedom from shame.
Freedom to heal.
Freedom to rebuild relationships.
Freedom to choose a different future.

Recovery isn’t about becoming someone new—it’s about reclaiming the person you’ve always been capable of becoming.

To everyone walking the road of recovery: your past does not define you. Every day you choose healing is another day you choose freedom.

🇺🇸 Happy Fourth of July from all of us at R.E.C. Treatment Center.

**July 2026 Update**

One month ago, we celebrated an incredible milestone together: the Rockwall County Commissioners Court unanimously approved R.E.C. Treatment Center's 10-week in-jail substance use treatment pilot program.

Today, we're excited to share that the work has officially begun.

Every milestone below represents more than organizational growth—it represents new opportunities for recovery, stronger families, and healthier communities. None of it would be possible without your encouragement, generosity, and belief in our mission.

Here's what we've been working on:
🚀 Our In-Jail Pilot Program Has Begun
After months of planning, we have officially begun providing substance use treatment services inside the Rockwall County Jail. It has been an incredible privilege to begin working alongside participants who are committed to making positive changes in their lives.

This program is about more than addressing substance use. It is about helping people develop healthier coping skills, rebuild relationships, prepare for successful reentry, and discover that recovery is possible.

🤝 A New Community Partnership
We are proud to announce a new partnership with the North Texas Behavioral Health Authority (NTBHA). Working together strengthens our ability to connect individuals and families with behavioral health resources throughout North Texas and expands opportunities for continued care after treatment.

🏛 Investing in Our Community
To deepen our roots in the communities we serve, R.E.C. Treatment Center has officially joined both the Rockwall Area Chamber of Commerce and the Royse City Chamber of Commerce.

We look forward to building relationships with local businesses, community leaders, and organizations that share our commitment to strengthening our community.

❤️ Stronger Together
Recovery doesn't happen in isolation, and neither does community impact.

Over the past month, we've had the privilege of meeting with several nonprofit leaders throughout Rockwall County and the surrounding area to explore ways we can work together to better support individuals and families. These conversations are laying the foundation for meaningful collaborations that will expand access to resources beyond treatment alone.

🎉 Connecting with Our Community
We recently participated in our first community outreach event, where we had the opportunity to introduce R.E.C. Treatment Center to local residents, answer questions about our mission, and welcome many new supporters.

Seeing the encouragement and enthusiasm from the community reminded us why this work matters so much.

Thank You
Every conversation...
Every partnership...
Every participant we serve...
Every milestone we celebrate...
..is possible because people like you believed in this mission.

Whether you've donated, shared our story, introduced us to someone new, prayed for our work, or simply encouraged us along the way, you are helping build bridges to recovery for individuals and families throughout our community.

As we continue growing, we invite you to remain part of this journey.

If you would like to help us continue expanding treatment services and community partnerships, please consider supporting our mission by making a gift at:
