Children absorb everything we say about them and to them, and they build their sense of self out of it. Long before they have the ability to question whether something is true, they simply believe it, because the people telling them are the people they love and trust the most.

And because they trust us completely, what we say lands differently than anything the world will ever tell them.

Research on self-concept development shows that the words children hear repeatedly about themselves become the lens through which they see themselves for years, sometimes for life.

A child who is told they are “too sensitive,” “too loud,” “too much,” or “always causing problems” doesn’t hear criticism; they hear identity. And they carry that identity into every classroom, every friendship, every relationship they will ever have.

But the reverse is equally true and equally powerful. A child who is told consistently that they are smart, kind, funny, capable, and loved exactly as they are builds an inner foundation that is incredibly hard to shake. Not because they’ve been spoiled or given empty praise, but because someone they trusted looked at them and reflected something worthy back.

That becomes the voice inside their head for the rest of their life!

So be intentional about the words you use with your child, not just in the big moments, but in the ordinary ones too; in the car, at dinner, at bedtime.

Tell them what you see in them, tell them often, and them even when they’re driving you crazy, because that’s actually when they need to hear it most.

✨ Build them up; don’t break them down. The world will challenge them enough. Let home be the place that always reminds them who they are. ✨ 💜

💡 What if your feelings aren’t problems to solve, but messages to understand?

Every emotion carries information. Joy reminds us what matters. Sadness points to what needs care. Anger highlights our boundaries. Fear seeks safety. Anxiety craves certainty. Even uncomfortable emotions can offer valuable clues about our needs.

The goal isn’t to get rid of our feelings. It’s to listen to them with curiosity, understand what they’re telling us, and choose how we respond.

When we treat emotions as data instead of enemies, we build the awareness needed to navigate life with greater wisdom and compassion. ❤️

✨ Which emotion have you been feeling most lately, and what do you think it might be trying to tell you?

A great message from Empowering Kids - Child & Adolescent Mental Health & Wellbeing!

How will you help fill your child’s cup today?🩵

A child’s behavior is often a reflection of how full (or empty) their emotional cup feels.
Connection, validation, and encouragement go a long way. 💛 🥤
Filling their cup doesn’t take big moments, just small, consistent ones.
The way we listen, validate, and connect becomes their inner voice.

Some great information to better understand stimming and how to help cope from The Contented Child, Child Wellbeing Consultancy 💜

Stimming is often misunderstood.

Many people see hand flapping, rocking, humming, fidgeting or repetitive movements and assume a child is being disruptive, distracted, or doing something that should be stopped. But for many autistic children and young people, stimming is a way of regulating their nervous system, processing emotions, managing sensory input, focusing attention, or expressing excitement and joy.

When we listen to the child’s perspective, we begin to understand that stimming is not usually the problem. In fact, it is often part of the solution.

This visual shares what many children might say if they could explain why they stim and what they need from the adults around them. Sometimes the most supportive response isn’t to stop the behaviour, but to understand the need behind it.
