We love the Northern Michigan Opioid Response Consortium and CPESM-Crawford Partnership to End Substance Misuse and the work they do educating and advocating in our communities! Dr. David McGreaham spoke today at the Crawford County Commission on Aging & Senior Center about prescription safety, harm reduction and how to use Narcan. Andrea Jo Schans shared community resources and gave away various helpful items like Narcan, drug lock boxes, and medication disposal aids. We are thankful our director Tobias Neal was able to attend.

Did you know that the highest rate of overdose risk in our area is to those age 55 and older? Why do you think that might be?

Flag Day is a great reminder of the history, resilience, and shared values that shape our communities here in Michigan and across the country. As a recovery center, we see every day how hope and perseverance can change lives—core qualities reflected in the story of the American flag.

Here are a few Flag Day facts we love to share:

• The current 50‑star design was created by a 17‑year‑old student in 1958. President Eisenhower selected it from more than 3,000 submissions.
• Our nation has had 27 official flag versions, most updated as new states joined the Union.
• Red, white, and blue were chosen to represent hardiness, purity, vigilance, and justice—values that continue to inspire communities working toward recovery.
• Six American flags have been placed on the moon by Apollo missions.
• Today’s design is the longest‑running in history, unchanged since 1959.

We’re grateful to serve Northern Michigan and proud to honor a symbol that represents strength, unity, and the belief that every person’s journey matters. How are you celebrating Flag Day this year? 🇺🇸

We’re excited to introduce For Us, That Means… - The NMSAS Recovery Center Blog.

This new space on our website will be a place for stories, insight, connection, and person-centered recovery resources.

At NMSAS, we talk a lot about recovery, dignity, support, harm reduction, connection, and meeting people where they are.

For us, that means… taking time to explain what those values look like in real life.

Through this blog, we’ll share reflections, education, resources, and encouragement for people in recovery, families, community partners, and anyone who wants to better understand substance use disorder and the many pathways of healing.

Because recovery is not just something that happens inside treatment.

Recovery grows through connection, compassion, community, and hope.

Stay tuned for our first posts coming soon.

Recovery doesn’t follow one set timeline or look the same for everyone.

At NMSAS Recovery Center, we believe that every step forward matters. Some days progress looks like reaching out for support. Other days it’s showing up for counseling, connecting with peer recovery services, or simply trying again. Healing is possible, and no step is too small.

If you or someone you care about is looking for compassionate, judgment-free substance use treatment in Michigan, our team is here to help.
