There’s something special about meeting the babies of the moms you’ve gotten to know so well during prenatal exams. Like hey kiddo, that was me doing Leopolds and getting to feel your movements and personality in utero.

My first baby, Anabel, was caught by Joan Doglio Smith, CNM back in 2014. She knitted her a hat while I was in labor, quietly monitoring from the corner and letting me do my thing. I am one of Joan’s student midwives now. On Monday Anabel came with me to the birth center for work and Joan taught her how to knit baby hats and booties (with some valuable tips by Vicki Meinhardt too). In a beautiful full circle moment, I was able to gift a sweet family the hat Joan helped Annie make.

...no, it's not Hemoglobin A1c....

A 2025 prospective observational study found that elevated C-reactive protein was the strongest independent predictor of GDM later in pregnancy.

Women with elevated CRP had 6-fold higher odds of GDM.

It was a stronger predictor than:
💥Family History
💥Postprandial Glucose
💥PCOS Diagnosis
💥Hemoglobin A1c

As we move forward, we are going to talk A LOT about oxidative stress and inflammation as the biggest trigger of GDM.

Did you receive antibiotics in labor? I started this IV in this dim room and discovered a cool tool I’ve since used again on a challenging stick. Using a flashlight and shining it horizontally across an arm with a tourniquet is a great way to illuminate veins quickly.
