A recent article explores the interesting fact that the death rate outpaced the birth rate in 21 states in 2022 - the latest year available for both data points.
Pennsylvania saw the biggest discrepancy with 16,929 more deaths than births. Florida and West Virginia followed, with 14,686 and 10,578 more deaths, respectively.
Health insurance expert Divya Sangameshwar notes this trend could have lasting economic implications. "Older Americans tend to have greater health care needs, including chronic disease management, hospitalizations and long-term care," she says. In addition to rising private health insurance costs, Sangameshwar notes that government health insurance programs like Medicare and Medicaid will also be affected.
In contrast, Texas had the largest surplus of births, coming in with 148,300 more births than deaths. California was the only other state with a six-figure birth surplus of 105,943. New York trailed a distant third with 33,830 more births than deaths.
