It feels impossible to open the news lately without seeing another story involving maternal mental health.

Different women. Different circumstances. Different outcomes.

But one thing continues to be painfully clear: we have to care about maternal mental health before it becomes a headline.

Not just when there is a tragedy.
Not just when there is a trial.
Not just when someone with a platform shares her story.

We have to care when a mother first says, “Something doesn’t feel right.”

And this responsibility cannot fall solely on mothers or the mental health professionals trying to help them.

We need policymakers, insurance companies, healthcare systems, hospitals, and pharmaceutical companies to be part of this conversation, too. We need systems that make it easier—not harder—to access appropriate care before someone reaches a crisis.

We need providers to be able to communicate and collaborate. We need mothers to be heard and taken seriously. And we need asking for help to be met with actual access to help—not another barrier.

I hope all of this attention leads to something bigger than conversation.

I hope it leads to change. 🤍

This case has been all over my feed, and as both a mom and a maternal mental health therapist, it’s been incredibly heavy to take in.

There is so much we may never fully know or understand about what happened behind closed doors. But I do know that maternal mental health deserves our attention—not only when tragedy happens.

Mothers deserve support. They deserve to be heard and taken seriously. Providers need to communicate with one another. And postpartum mental health concerns deserve appropriate recognition, care, and urgency.

I hate that it takes something this devastating to bring these conversations to the forefront, but I hope we keep having them long after the headlines fade. 🤍

And if this case has started to feel too heavy or all-consuming, it’s also okay to turn it off for a while.

There has never been a more important time to talk about maternal mental health.

Motherhood can be beautiful, but it can also be overwhelming, isolating, and incredibly hard. No mom should have to carry those feelings alone.

Our Fall Postpartum Support Group is back because every mother deserves a safe place to be seen, supported, and reminded that she’s not alone. 🤍
