Ultra-Processed Foods Make Up Half of Most Kids’ Daily Calorie Intake.

Ultra-processed foods are industrially formulated products that typically contain added sugars, fats, and salt to enhance flavor and extend shelf life. According to a recent review, ultra-processed foods now account for 50–60% of total daily energy intake among children and adolescents in many high-income countries, including the United States. A high intake of ultra-processed foods has been linked to an elevated risk of obesity, metabolic syndrome, early cardiovascular risk, dental caries, and allergic diseases.

Small Increases in Daily Activity Could Significantly Reduce Diabetes Risk.

According to a modeling study based on two national datasets, increasing daily leisure-time physical activity by 10, 20, or 30 minutes among inactive adults could prevent an estimated 7.0%, 12.9%, and 16.0% of future type 2 diabetes cases, respectively.

Shoulder, Elbow, or Wrist Pain May Warrant a Spine Evaluation.

In a case series of three patients with spinal dysfunction and upper extremity pain that did not correspond with typical pain referral patterns from the spine, researchers found that spinal manipulation and mobilization—manual therapy techniques commonly used by chiropractors—were associated with clinically significant improvements in arm pain and disability. The findings suggest clinicians should include the spine when evaluating patients with shoulder, elbow, and wrist pain.

Stress May Shape Beverage Choices.

Daily surveys completed by 67 healthy young adults over the course of a week found that higher perceived stress was associated with increased consumption of tea and coffee, two beverages rich in polyphenols that may help protect against some of the body's harmful physiological responses to stress.
