Dr. Anna Bannon graduated from University of South Florida in 2007 and Auburn University's College of Veterinary Medicine in 2011. She worked in a private practice in the Tampa area for 5 years, then worked night shifts in an emergency vet clinic in Palm Harbor for 2 years before opening Family Animal Hospital.

Today we're celebrating the curious, clever, and endlessly entertaining cats who fill our homes (and our hearts). Whether they're supervising from the highest shelf, demanding breakfast at 4 a.m., or curling up in your lap after a long day, life is simply better with a cat by your side.

If your pet struggles with fireworks, loud noises, or storm anxiety, now is the best time to request refills for stress and anxiety support medications. The closer we get to the holiday, the busier medication requests become.

🐾 What Is Cooperative Care?

For many pets, veterinary visits, nail trims, medications, and even basic handling can feel overwhelming. Traditional restraint can sometimes increase fear and anxiety, which is why some hospitals are shifting toward a gentler, more collaborative approach called cooperative care.

Cooperative care uses positive reinforcement training to help pets become willing participants in their own care. Through patience, trust-building, and low-stress handling techniques, pets can learn to feel more comfortable with things like injections, blood draws, grooming, nail trims, and examinations.

At Family Animal Hospital, we believe emotional health matters, too. That’s why we focus on minimizing stress whenever possible through happy visits, fear-free handling techniques, pre-visit medications when appropriate, and helping families manage stressors at home before appointments even begin.

The earlier these skills are introduced, the better. Teaching pets that veterinary care can feel safe and predictable helps build confidence that can last a lifetime. ❤️

🐾 Aging Can Affect Stress, Fear & Anxiety in Pets

As dogs and cats grow older, both physical and cognitive changes can make the world feel less comfortable, predictable, and secure. Many senior pets become more sensitive to stress because of pain, reduced mobility, sensory decline, and changes in brain function.

Many age-related stress behaviors can improve when underlying medical conditions, pain, mobility concerns, and cognitive changes are recognized early. Thoughtful environmental adjustments, routine veterinary care, behavioral support, pain management, and enrichment can dramatically improve quality of life for senior pets and the families who love them.

⛈️ The stormy season has arrived! 🐾

Thunder, lightning, heavy rain, and changes in barometric pressure can trigger intense fear and anxiety in some pets. Signs may include trembling, panting, pacing, hiding, vocalizing, accidents in the house, or attempts to escape. For many pets, these fears can worsen over time if left unaddressed.

If your pet becomes anxious during storms, try creating a calm, quiet “safe space” where they can retreat and feel secure. Some pets prefer darker areas such as closets, bathrooms, or spaces under desks during severe weather. Rather than repeatedly reassuring fearful behavior, focus on staying calm yourself and offering quiet support and gentle, steady contact if your pet seeks comfort.

It’s also important to remember that pets kept outdoors may panic during storms and attempt to escape, sometimes injuring themselves in the process. Bringing pets indoors during severe weather and preparing ahead of storm season can make a tremendous difference in their safety and comfort.

The earlier we recognize and address storm-related anxiety, the more opportunities we have to help pets feel safe, supported, and protected. ❤️
