Let's talk about something most weight-loss conversations get wrong: obesity isn't about willpower.

Worldwide, over 1 billion people live with obesity today. Nearly half of all U.S. adults meet the clinical threshold, and so do 1 in 5 U.S. children and teens (ages 2–19). These aren't numbers about laziness. They're numbers about hormones, gut health, chronic inflammation, sleep, and stress, factors that shape how our bodies store and burn energy long before diet or exercise even enter the picture.

The real risk isn't the number on the scale. It's what obesity does quietly in the background: raising the odds of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers, starting earlier in life than most people realize.

Here's the part worth sitting with: when the root cause gets addressed instead of just the symptom, this is a condition that responds to treatment, at any age. That's where real, lasting change starts.

Ever wonder why some people swear by fish oil while others say "it never did anything for me"?

Turns out, omega-3 works best under the right conditions, and small everyday habits make a bigger difference than most people realize.

Here's what actually helps:

- Cut back on fried food and vegetable oils. They compete with omega-3 in your body, so less of them means your omega-3 has more room to actually work.

- Eat fatty fish 2-3 times a week. Real food sources absorb differently than supplements alone, and your body benefits from both.

- Test, don't guess your dose. Everyone processes omega-3 differently. A simple test tells you exactly where you stand, instead of hoping the bottle's dose is right for you.

Small shifts. Real results.

Curious about your own numbers? Comment "OMEGA" and we'll walk you through getting tested.

Last time, we covered why you can't feel your omega-3 levels. Here's the next piece of the puzzle.

Your body doesn't process omega-3 in isolation. There's another fat, omega-6, sitting in most vegetable oils, fried foods, and packaged snacks, and it's fighting for the exact same job in your cells.

The imbalance is bigger than most people realize. We evolved eating these two fats in close to equal amounts. Today, the average diet runs at roughly 15 times more omega-6 than omega-3. That gap alone can undercut a supplement that should otherwise be working just fine.

This is part of why dosage alone isn't the full story. What's competing against your omega-3 matters just as much as how much you're taking.

Here's something most of our patients are surprised to learn.

Feeling "fine" doesn't mean your omega-3 levels are actually where they should be.

We see this constantly. People who eat reasonably well, some who even take a supplement, and yet when we test their actual blood levels, the numbers tell a completely different story than expected.

The truth is, there's no symptom checklist for this. No, "you'll feel tired if you're low." It's silent, which is exactly why testing matters more than assuming.

We're starting a short series this week covering the hidden factors that affect your omega-3 levels, even if you think you're already doing everything right. Coming up: the ratio problem, why absorption isn't universal, why dosing isn't one-size-fits-all, and how it all comes together.

Ever been told you're "allergic" to something, but the reaction doesn't quite match what you'd expect from an allergy?

There's a real difference between a food allergy, an intolerance, and a sensitivity, and most people (including a lot of clinicians) use the words interchangeably.

Intolerance = your digestive system struggling with something, no immune system involved. No symptoms outside the gastrointestinal tract.
Sensitivity = where many people fall into, and it may or may not be mediated by the immune system.
Allergy = your immune system reacting, sometimes right away, sometimes hours later.

Real food allergies only affect about 2.5% of people. So there's a good chance what's being called an "allergy" is actually something else, and that changes how it should be assessed and treated.

Most parents have no idea artificial food dyes could be doing THIS to their kids' behavior. 😳

Dr. Todd Born unpacks a study that found artificial coloring worsened symptoms in kids with ADHD, and even triggered ADHD-like symptoms in kids who had NONE before.

Have you ever felt like your body is working against you, even when you're doing everything "right?”

You're eating well. You're moving more. But the weight won't budge.
Here's something most doctors don't tell you: your gut bacteria might be part of the reason.

When your gut microbiome is out of balance (a condition called dysbiosis) several things happen at once:
- Your body produces less of the hormone that makes you feel full
- Inflammation goes up, and your body holds onto fat
- Your cravings get harder to control (yes, this is biological, not weakness)

The frustrating part? None of this shows up on a standard blood test.
"Eat less, move more" isn't a solution when the underlying biology is working against you.

Most patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome are handed a diagnosis β€” but never given a real answer.

Dr. Todd A. Born, ND, CNS has spent 20+ years asking the harder question: why does this patient have CFS?

At Born Integrative Medicine Specialists, PLLC, that's exactly how we approach every case.

Most CFS patients get a diagnosis. Very few get an answer.

There's a critical difference between the two, and it's the reason so many people with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome spend years suffering without real relief.

Getting diagnosed tells you what is happening in your body.
Finding the why is what actually leads to healing.

Conventional labs find the root cause of CFS in only 5% of cases. The other 95%? They're sent home with a name for their suffering but no real path forward.

In my 20+ years of integrative medicine practice, I don't stop at the diagnosis. I investigate what's actually driving each patient's CFS, whether that's a reactivated virus like EBV or HHV-6, mitochondrial breakdown, adrenal exhaustion, mycotoxins, heavy metals, gut dysfunction, or hormonal imbalance, and it the most complex cases, it’s typically very multi-factorial.

Every patient's "WHY" is different. Every treatment plan should be too.

500+ patients. 98% improved by at least 90%.
The difference wasn't a miracle. It was asking the right questions and finding the right answers. πŸ’™
