I love to grow roses. Even the Knock Outs that adorn the landscape beautifully.
But for my herbal products,
I choose heirloom and fragrant varieties.

Some of my favorite reasons to plant them:

🌹 Infused oils for face and skin
Dried petals can be added to oil for a gentle, skin-supporting infusion. I especially love using rose in simple facial oils for my dry, mature skin.

🥀Rose + oat bath soaks
A handful of rose petals with oats in a muslin bag, makes a soothing bath that supports both the skin and the nervous system. I usually steep it first in a quart jar for around 30 minutes before running my bath.

🌹Hydrosols and distillation
If you ever step into distillation, fragrant heirloom roses are worth it. They produce a true rose hydrosol that can be used for skin care, linen sprays, and simple daily use.

Modern roses are beautiful and look full, but many have little to offer beyond appearance.
Heirloom roses give you something you can gather, prepare, and actually use in your home.

Another cold snap had me so cold this morning, but once the sun was up good- it's out to greenhouse I go to warm right up! It's been a much colder winter for us in the south and these herb babies have been slow going but they are growing!! So excited!

After decades of anxiety, this is personal for me.

The last couple of weeks have been full — the kind of full that settles into your nervous system.

So tonight I’m making myself a blend of passionflower, lemon balm, milky oats, oat straw, and tulsi.

This is why I grow what I grow.
This is why I make what I make.
This why I thank God for all He has done.

Because when life feels like a lot, I don’t feel helpless anymore. I have knowledge. I have options. And that has changed everything for me.

Cold stratifying some of our medicinal herbs to improve germination 🌱

We simply place the seeds on a damp paper towel, spread them out, cover them with another damp towel, slide them into a plastic bag, and refrigerate for 2–4 weeks. That’s it. We’re just imitating winter so our little seed babies are more likely to grow.

Right now we’re cold stratifying Echinacea, Elecampane, Marshmallow, Lavender, Yarrow, Dandelion, Angelica, Lovage, Lamb’s Ear, Motherwort, Caraway, and Chives.

Skipping this step is one of the biggest reasons certain seeds don’t sprout.
