Biotensegrity is a model for understanding living systems as interconnected structures, where tension, compression, and force relationships help organize the body and maintain stability.
In this model, a change in one part of the system doesn’t exist in isolation. The body is constantly adapting to changes in load, movement, gravity, and its environment — reorganizing relationships throughout the system while maintaining stability.
And this is one of the reasons I find the biotensegrity model so interesting in chiropractic.
An adjustment isn’t simply about “putting a bone back in place.”
It is an input.
A specific mechanical and sensory input into an already interconnected system.
When we introduce an input in one area, we’re not working with that structure in isolation. We’re working with a body whose tissues, joints, movement patterns, and nervous system are constantly communicating and adapting together.
This gives us a fascinating way to think about what we’re working with:
A body that is connected.
A body that adapts.
A body that is constantly organizing itself.
And perhaps that’s part of what makes the body so remarkable:
Change the input.
Observe the response.
Work with the whole system.
