Brandon thought he was too busy to donate blood. Then a blood drive showed up in the middle of his workday.

He was traveling for work when he spotted the blood drive and made a decision: spend his lunch break donating.

As a type O donor, Brandon knows his blood type is especially important to patients. But for him, the reason to give is also deeply personal.

His grandmother once needed a blood transfusion while she was in the hospital. That transfusion gave his family more time with her and the opportunity to say goodbye. Brandon became emotional as he shared what those moments meant to his family.

A busy schedule can make it easy to put blood donation off. Sometimes, the opportunity to make time is closer than you think.

What happens before and after a blood donation matters, too.

As a Vitalant volunteer, Mike helps make sure donors feel welcomed, supported and appreciated from the moment they arrive until they’re ready to head home.

He greets donors at pre-registration, helps them find their way and makes sure they have a snack and time to recharge after donating. Along the way, he’s gotten to know the people behind the donations and the many reasons they choose to give.

But Mike’s commitment doesn’t stop when his volunteer shift ends. He also coordinates blood drives with community partners and serves on Vitalant’s Community Leadership Council, helping strengthen the donor community and support a reliable blood supply for patients.

For Mike, it all comes back to one thing: making it easier for people to give and be part of something that matters.

The blood that saved Jennifer's grandmother was already there when her family needed it most.

Her grandmother required blood during a quadruple bypass surgery, and because donors had stepped up before the emergency, she received the care she needed.

That experience changed Jennifer's perspective on blood donation.

She began donating regularly because she wanted other families to have the same chance when the unexpected happens.

Today, Jennifer continues to support blood donation because she understands what it means when blood is available at the right moment.

What started with one family's experience became a lasting commitment to helping patients and the people who love them. Join them and give blood: vitalant.org

Last Tuesday, hundreds of student leaders from high schools across Arizona gathered at Chase Field to learn how to host successful blood drives, strengthen leadership skills, and make a positive impact in their communities.

High school students play an important role in maintaining Arizona’s blood supply. Nearly 10% of Arizona donors are high school students.

This year, Vitalant also welcomed BOK Financial as a sponsor of three $5,000 scholarships that support student leaders and their community involvement. Mathew Blades and the Arizona Diamondbacks continued their annual support too.

Finally, teens heard from 19-year-old Maddie who receives monthly transfusions and showed the students who their hard work saves.

For Maureen, a blood drive is about much more than filling appointment slots.

In her community, Maureen helps coordinate blood drives by connecting with donors, building relationships, and creating opportunities for people to show up for patients in need.

"Most of my adult life I have been involved in helping people find what they want or get where they're going. Setting up appointments and talking with prospective blood donors brings me so much joy. Helping people to possibly save a life is such a fulfilling purpose. Not to mention all the long-time friends I have made along the way."

That sense of purpose has turned blood drive coordination into something deeply personal for Maureen. Along the way, she's built lasting friendships and helped connect countless donors with an opportunity to support patients.

Thank you, Maureen, for the time, heart and care you bring to every blood drive and every donor you connect with. Community support starts with people like you.

At 11 years old, Viv was getting ready for sixth grade. Then everything changed.

After feeling unusually tired this summer, the energetic 11-year-old was diagnosed with BPDCN, a rare blood cancer. She is just beginning treatment, with a bone marrow transplant ahead.

Now, sixth grade will include school from home, hospital stays and treatment. Blood and platelet transfusions have already become part of her care.

“Every time she gets a transfusion, she feels so much better,” said her mom, Amanda. “It’s lifesaving. I didn’t realize how frequently she would need a transfusion, or how much someone with cancer can need.”

This Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Viv’s story brings attention to a part of cancer treatment many people may not realize: Patients with cancer can depend on donated blood and platelets throughout their care.

🩸 At just 1 year old, Stacey’s little sister needed blood transfusions to survive leukemia. Decades later, that experience would shape a 42-year career dedicated to caring for the people who give blood and helping patients who need it most.

We’re celebrating Stacey and the compassion she has brought to Vitalant donors for more than four decades.

When Stacey’s younger sister was diagnosed with leukemia, she needed chemotherapy and multiple blood transfusions. Seeing firsthand the lifesaving impact of blood donors on her own family inspired Stacey to pursue a career dedicated to helping others.

Over the years, she’s comforted countless donors, especially those who are nervous about giving blood for the first time. She loves helping people understand the impact of their donation and why every donor matters.

“Working at Vitalant is so rewarding because you know your job has a purpose. You’re helping people every day.”

As Stacey approaches retirement, she says she can’t imagine having chosen any other career.

Outside of Vitalant, Stacey has spent years serving her community, including 12 years on her local school board, six of them as president. She remains active in her church and cherishes time with her husband, Willie, their children and grandchildren.

Stacey, thank you for 42 years of compassion, dedication and commitment to caring for blood donors and helping make lifesaving blood available to patients. ❤️

Inspired by Stacey’s story? Give blood and be part of the lifesaving impact. Schedule your appointment at vitalant.org. 🩸
