Fever rules every parent should know 👇”

Not every fever is an emergency, but some need attention right away.

• Be seen in the ER if your baby is under two months and has a fever (greater than or equal to 100.4F).
• Be seen if your child has had a fever for longer than 5 days.
• Be seen if your child has had a fever that goes away and then returns.
• Be seen if your child has had a fever with difficulty breathing, blue/gray lips or skin, seizure, unresponsiveness or lethargy, stiff neck or severe headache, persistent abdominal pain and/or vomiting or inability to keep fluids down, and/or signs of dehydration (crying without tears, dry mouth, not urinating at least once in 8 hrs).

Save this and call us anytime you’re unsure. That's what we are here for!

Allergy season is starting here in Gillette 🌾🤧 and we’re seeing more kids at Cloud Peak Pediatrics struggling with sneezing, nasal congestion, itchy/watery eyes, and lingering coughs.

Understanding & Treating Allergies in Children

Allergies occur when the immune system overreacts to things like:
* Tree, grass, or w**d pollen
* Dust mites
* Pet dander
* Mold

Common symptoms include:
✔️ Clear runny nose
✔️ Frequent sneezing
✔️ Nasal congestion
✔️ Itchy, watery, or puffy eyes
✔️ Post-nasal drip causing cough
✔️ Dark circles under the eyes (“allergic shiners”)
✔️ Throat clearing

Unlike colds, allergies typically:
* Do NOT cause fever
* Last for weeks or months
* Fluctuate with seasons or exposures

When Should You Start Treatment?

If your child has predictable seasonal allergies (for example, symptoms every spring or fall), it’s often best to:

🗓️ Start preventive treatment about 1–2 weeks before symptoms usually begin.
Nasal steroid sprays, in particular, work best when started early and used consistently throughout the allergy season. Waiting until congestion is severe can make symptoms harder to control.

For children with year-round allergies, daily maintenance treatment during high-trigger times may be recommended.
If you’re unsure when your child’s “allergy season” typically starts, we’re happy to help you map that out.

Treatment Options

* Environmental control
• Keep windows closed during high pollen days
• Wash bedding weekly in hot water
• Shower after outdoor activities
• Use mattress and pillow dust-mite covers
• Change home air filters regularly
* Saline nasal spray or rinses
• Flush allergens from nasal passages
• Safe for daily use
• Especially helpful before bedtime
* Antihistamines
• Help with sneezing, itching, and runny nose
• Non-drowsy options are available
• We’ll guide you on proper dosing by age and weight
* Nasal steroid sprays
• Most effective treatment for nasal congestion
• Work best when used consistently
• Safe for long-term use when monitored properly
* Eye drops
• Can provide relief for itchy, watery eyes

*** Asthma evaluation (if needed)
If your child has wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, or a nighttime cough, we may evaluate for asthma, as allergies and asthma often go hand-in-hand.

When Is Allergy Testing Recommended?

Allergy testing isn’t needed for every child, but it may be helpful if:
* Symptoms are severe or year-round
* Symptoms are not improving with standard treatment
* Your child requires multiple medications to stay comfortable
* There is concern for asthma triggered by allergies
* You’re unsure what specific trigger is causing symptoms
* Your child has frequent sinus infections related to congestion
* There is concern for food allergies or significant reactions
*** Testing can help identify specific triggers and guide targeted avoidance strategies or referral for immunotherapy (allergy shots) when appropriate.

🌟 When to schedule a visit:
* Symptoms lasting more than 2 weeks
* Sleep disruption from congestion
* Recurring sinus or ear infections
* Cough that won’t go away
* Over-the-counter medications not helping
*** Allergies can significantly impact sleep, school performance, and overall comfort — but kids don’t have to just “live with it.”

📞 Call us today to schedule an appointment. We reserve same-day visits for sick concerns and are happy to help your child breathe easier this season.

Your child’s comfort matters — and we’re here to help every step of the way!

Albuterol in Kids: Clearing Up Common Misconceptions

Albuterol is one of the most commonly prescribed breathing medications for children—but it’s also one of the most misunderstood. Let’s talk about what it does (and what it doesn’t), especially when it comes to viral upper respiratory infections (URIs), bronchiolitis, and croup.

What Albuterol actually does…
Albuterol is a bronchodilator. It works by relaxing smooth muscle in the lower airways, helping to open up bronchi that are narrowed due to bronchospasm—most commonly seen in asthma or reactive airway disease.

Common misconceptions 👀
❌ “Albuterol helps any cough or noisy breathing.”
✅ Not true. Many viral illnesses cause cough, congestion, or noisy breathing due to mucus, inflammation, or upper airway swelling, not bronchospasm. Albuterol doesn’t fix those problems.
❌ “If a child is wheezing, Albuterol always helps.”
✅ Wheezing in infants and young children (like with bronchiolitis) is often caused by airway swelling and mucus—not smooth muscle constriction. Multiple studies show Albuterol does not routinely improve outcomes in bronchiolitis.
❌ “Albuterol treats croup.”
✅ Croup is an upper airway problem (larynx and trachea), causing stridor and a barky cough. Albuterol targets the lower airways, so it doesn’t help croup. Treatments that do work include steroids and nebulized epinephrine, when indicated.
❌ “It can’t hurt to try Albuterol.”
✅ Albuterol is generally safe, but unnecessary use can cause tachycardia, jitteriness, tremors, and anxiety, and may delay more appropriate treatment—or provide false reassurance that the illness just needs time and supportive care.

When Albuterol makes sense ✅
• Known asthma (reactive airway disease)
• Clear signs of bronchospasm
• Prior documented response to Albuterol

Bottom line..
Not every cough or breathing issue in kids needs Albuterol. Viral URIs, bronchiolitis, and croup are usually not Albuterol-responsive conditions. Using the right treatment for the right problem matters—for safety, effectiveness, and peace of mind.

If you’re unsure whether Albuterol is appropriate, it’s always worth discussing the specific diagnosis and expected benefit with a healthcare provider.

🦠 Antibiotics: Common Misconceptions & What Parents Should Know

Antibiotics are powerful medications, but they aren’t always the answer. Here are a few common misconceptions:

❌ Antibiotics help my child get better faster.
✅ Antibiotics only work against bacterial infections, not viruses like colds, flu, RSV, COVID, most coughs, and most sore throats.

❌ Antibiotics won’t hurt even if they’re not needed.
✅ Taking antibiotics when they aren’t necessary can actually cause harm, including:
* Unnecessary side effects like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rashes or allergic reactions
* Yeast infections
* Disruption of normal, healthy gut bacteria

⚠️ The biggest concern: ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE!
Using antibiotics when they aren’t needed allows bacteria to adapt and become resistant. This means antibiotics may not work when your child truly needs them!

✅ When antibiotics ARE helpful:
* Ear infections caused by bacteria
* Strep throat
* Sinus infections
* Pneumonia caused by bacteria

At Cloud Peak Pediatrics, we carefully evaluate each child to determine whether antibiotics are truly needed. Most of the time, the best medicine is rest, fluids, and time—allowing the body to fight off viral infections naturally.

💙 Trust us to prescribe antibiotics only when they’re safe, necessary, and beneficial for your child.
