🤝 FALL PREVENTION TAKES A TEAM.

Falls are complicated.

Balance may be part of the problem—but so can strength, medications, vision, cognition, blood pressure, sensation, footwear, the environment, medical conditions and the demands of everyday activities.

That’s why preventing falls may require several professionals working toward the same goal:

💚 OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY
Balance, strength, functional mobility, transfers, ADLs/IADLs, cognition, vision/perception, home and environmental factors, adaptive equipment, routines and community participation.

💙 PHYSICAL THERAPY
Balance, strength, gait, mobility, transfers, endurance and movement.

🩷 SPEECH THERAPY
Cognition and communication factors that may affect safety when indicated.

🩺 MEDICAL PROVIDER
Medical conditions, blood pressure and overall health management.

💊 PHARMACIST
Medication review and identification of medications that may contribute to fall risk.

👁️ EYE-CARE PROFESSIONAL
Vision assessment and treatment.

🦶 PODIATRY
Foot health, sensation and footwear concerns.

And the most important member of the team?

YOU.

Fall prevention isn’t about taking away someone’s independence.

It’s about protecting it.

At BEYOND Quality Of Life, our OT, PT and SLP team can evaluate and address many of the functional factors contributing to fall risk—right where everyday life happens.

⚠️ YOUR FALL-RISK SCREEN SHOWS YOU MAY BE AT RISK. NOW WHAT?

First—remember that a fall-risk screening is just that: a screening.

The next step is figuring out WHY you’re at risk.

Two people can have the exact same fall-risk score for completely different reasons.

Your risk may involve:

⚖️ Balance
💪 Strength or endurance
🚶 Walking or functional mobility
💊 Medications
👁️ Vision
🧠 Cognition or attention
🦶 Feet, sensation or footwear
🪑 Difficulty with transfers
🏡 Your home environment
😟 Fear of falling
🛁 Difficulty safely completing everyday activities
❤️ Other medical factors

That’s why effective fall prevention should be individualized.

A comprehensive evaluation can help identify which factors are contributing to YOUR risk—and which ones may be addressed.

At BEYOND Quality Of Life, our therapists don’t just want to know whether you’re at risk for falling.

We want to understand WHY.

Then we can develop a treatment plan focused on the areas where skilled therapy can help.

🩷 SPEECH THERAPY ISN’T JUST ABOUT SPEECH.

When people hear “Speech Therapy,” they usually think about helping someone pronounce words.

For adults, Speech-Language Pathologists can address much more.

🗣️ COMMUNICATION
Difficulty speaking, understanding language or finding the right words.

🧠 COGNITION
Challenges involving memory, attention, organization, problem-solving and other cognitive-communication skills.

🥤 SWALLOWING
Difficulty safely or comfortably eating and drinking.

These challenges can occur with aging, stroke, neurological conditions, illness and other changes in health.

And they can have a huge impact on independence and quality of life.

BEYOND Quality Of Life now offers:

💚 Occupational Therapy
💙 Physical Therapy
🩷 Speech Therapy

Because sometimes helping someone remain independent takes more than one piece of the puzzle.

🔎 WHAT DOES AN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST LOOK FOR WHEN SOMEONE IS FALLING?

A lot more than you might expect.

We may evaluate:

⚖️ Can you maintain your balance when standing, reaching or changing direction?

💪 Do you have the strength and endurance needed to safely complete everyday activities?

🚶 How safely are you moving through your home and community?

🪑 Can you safely get on and off your bed, toilet and favorite chair?

🧠 Can you divide your attention while moving—or does talking, carrying something or thinking about another task affect your safety?

👁️ Are vision or visual-perceptual changes making obstacles harder to detect?

🛁 What happens when you actually step into YOUR shower, get dressed or complete other daily activities?

🏡 Does the environment support your abilities—or make everyday tasks harder?

😟 Has fear of falling changed how you move or caused you to stop doing things you enjoy?

Then we use what we find to develop an individualized treatment plan.

That may include balance training, strengthening, functional mobility, transfer training, task-specific practice, cognitive strategies, environmental modifications, adaptive equipment, patient education, caregiver training—or a combination of approaches.

That’s the broad scope of Occupational Therapy.

We don’t just ask whether someone is at risk for falling.

We ask WHY—and what we can do about it.

💙 MOVEMENT IS A BIG PART OF INDEPENDENCE.

Getting out of your favorite chair.

Walking to the mailbox.

Climbing the steps into your home.

Going shopping.

Getting back to the activities you enjoy.

When strength, balance, pain or mobility starts making those things difficult, Physical Therapy may help.

Our PT team can address:

💪 Strength
⚖️ Balance
🚶 Walking & mobility
🪜 Stairs & transfers
❤️‍🩹 Pain and movement limitations
⚠️ Fall prevention

And because BEYOND provides mobile outpatient therapy, we can address many mobility challenges in the environment where they actually happen.

The goal isn’t just better movement. It’s what better movement allows you to DO.

Monday THIS or THAT 👇

🏡 If you had to choose…

A: Stay in the home you love and make changes as you need them

OR

B: Move somewhere smaller where there’s less to take care of

Which one are you choosing?

A or B?

And if you feel like telling us why, even better. I have a feeling we’re going to get some strong opinions on this one. 😂

💚 FALL PREVENTION IS OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY.

Did you know an Occupational Therapist can evaluate and treat many of the factors that put someone at risk for falling?

Fall prevention can involve much more than checking the home for hazards.

Depending on the patient’s needs, an OT may address:

⚖️ Balance & postural control
💪 Strength & endurance
🚶 Functional mobility
🪑 Transfers
🤲 Coordination
🧠 Cognition, attention & safety awareness
👁️ Vision & visual-perceptual skills
🛁 ADLs & IADLs
🏡 Home & environmental safety
😟 Fear of falling & confidence
🦯 Adaptive equipment & assistive devices
👨‍👩‍👧 Patient & caregiver training
🌳 Community mobility & participation

And here’s where the OT perspective becomes especially powerful:

We look at how these abilities work together during real life.

It’s one thing to maintain your balance during an exercise.

It’s another to maintain your balance while getting dressed, stepping into the shower, carrying groceries, reaching into a cabinet or navigating an uneven yard.

Occupational Therapy connects the skills you need with the life you want to live.

At BEYOND Quality Of Life, our OTs provide fall prevention where life actually happens. 🏡

💚 WHAT DOES OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY ACTUALLY DO?

If you said, “Help people find jobs,” you’re definitely not alone. 😉

In healthcare, an occupation is anything you need or want to do in your everyday life.

For an older adult, that might mean:

🛁 Taking a shower safely
👕 Getting dressed independently
🍳 Preparing a meal
🚽 Getting on and off the toilet
💊 Managing daily routines
🛒 Getting back into the community
🏡 Making the home safer
❤️ Continuing hobbies and activities that give life meaning

At BEYOND Quality Of Life, our OTs work with patients in their real environment—so we’re not just practicing activities.

We’re helping people get back to living their lives.

⚠️ HOW HIGH IS YOUR FALL RISK?

You don’t have to wait until you fall to start asking that question.

The CDC’s STEADI “Stay Independent” Fall Risk Self-Assessment is a simple 12-question screening tool that can help identify whether you may be at increased risk for falling.

It asks about things like:

🚶 Walking and balance
😟 Worry about falling
🦵 Leg strength
🚽 Rushing to the bathroom
🦶 Sensation in your feet
💊 Medications
😴 Feeling lightheaded or unusually tired
⚠️ Previous falls

A score of 4 or more may indicate increased fall risk.

🛑 FALL PREVENTION SHOULD START BEFORE THE FALL.

Have you heard of STEADI?

STEADI stands for Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths & Injuries and was developed by the CDC to help healthcare professionals identify and address fall risk in older adults.

The approach has three important steps:

🔎 SCREEN
Identify whether someone may be at increased risk for falling.

📋 ASSESS
Look more closely at the individual factors contributing to that risk.

🛠️ INTERVENE
Address the risk factors that can be changed.

And that’s important because fall risk isn’t caused by just one thing.

Balance, strength, walking, medications, vision, blood pressure, feet and footwear, the home environment and other health factors can all play a role.

At BEYOND Quality Of Life, fall prevention is a major focus of our therapy services.

We believe identifying risk before a serious fall occurs can create an opportunity to intervene earlier.
