It was a beautiful night to welcome a new baby ☺️

A beautiful full moon over the pasture last night shortly before I headed to a birth with the amazing Heirloom Midwifery. It was a beautiful drive through the country side. Welcome baby boy!! ❤️

I love big tubs of warm water in your living room for labor & also using pitocin to control your bleeding after birth. That’s modern midwifery and I’m grateful for it.

Just because I have a medication, doesn’t mean I give it to everyone.

Part of being a midwife is talking to families about birthday interventions way before they ever happen so we can get on the same page.

Most often, medication intervention isn’t the first choice for either of us.

I’d rather keep your birth quiet and calm to keep you from bleeding as much ( ask me how this works ), remind you to hydrate with water + electrolytes throughout labor, give your baby a minute to come around to breathing on their own with you talking to them and rubbing their body.

And when that doesn’t work, I also trust in medicine to back up our efforts.

It’s a great time in history to birth at home.

Hi!! It’s time for an updated introduction. I’m Hannah of Heirloom Midwifery.

Ten years ago I was hiring a doula and discovering the birth world for the first time. I became a birth doula myself in January of 2017 - only six months after the birth of my son.

Little did I know, it would be that training where the first seed was planted that led me to home birth midwifery and the Midwifery Model of Care™️

To eat or not to eat?

has a run down on the evidence and I recommend checking it out before running to the grocery store! Many hospital based providers will recommend against eating in labor.

As a homebirth midwife, I like to remind parents that birth is a marathon event. Your uterus is a muscle that needs to be fed - starving it is counter productive. A balanced meal with complex carbs, protein, and fiber are perfect for early labor for sustainable energy.

BUT, most of the time, your appetite will dwindle as contractions get more intense and having some easy to grab & get down sources of energy will be better than trying to stomach a real dinner in active labor.

If you're on the health and wellness side of instagram, you may be avoiding sugar at all costs. I'm here to remind you, it's the preferred source of energy for your muscles and helps transport those precious electrolytes for better hydration! Consider carbohydrates for labor and a big protein meal postpartum!

Consult your healthcare provider before making decisions about labor snacks 😉

Non-aesthetic protein snack reminder. Feeling crappy between meals? It could be blood sugar instability.

Adding protein (and fiber) to your meals or snacks helps stabilize your blood glucose and keep nausea away (to a degree) during pregnancy.

Mix it up and add toppings you like to prevent making these snacks from becoming a chore.

Safe catch tuna is the lowest mercury brand I have found on the market - they test every fish and there's a long list of benefits of omega-3s. Sardines have even more omegas and lower mercury but may be harder to stomach 😬

Blend cottage cheese if you hate the clumps. I mix it into peanut butter or top spaghetti with it. It's higher in protein than most Greek yogurts without the tanginess.

I like oikos vanilla yogurt topped with pepitas, walnuts, frozen raspberries (Walmart has better frozen fruit than Kroger imo), honey and salt.

One string cheese is usually about 6 grams of protein and very easy to eat!

And of course nut butters are available in packets for busy days or if you aren't one to remember snacks before leaving the house - these are easily kept in your bag and are shelf stable.

Do you have any quick and easy protein snacks you'd add to the list?

A dirty mirror selfie for this account.

Those September babies all showed up together just like last year.

I'm taking my last few continuing education classes to prepare for my midwifery license in Kentucky, and all the boring but necessary details of making sure I can take my own clients in 2026.

New pink lamp at the office (habitat for humanity in Glasgow is dangerously close by). Kroger flowers, egg and cheese bagels, and big trees on long walks. More updates soon 😊
