It’s crunch time, people.
United Healthcare and Anthem and flagrantly ignoring the spirit of the ACA-
😔If you’re one of the hoards of people turned away from skilled lactation care, this matters.
😔If you have grandchildren, this matters.
😔If you care about your sister who is struggling to meet her feeding goals, this matters.
It matters for ALL of us.

Friends, family, current and past patients, fellow maternal and infant specialists, please, please, please get the word out about this! This is a very important and urgent issue that will affect millions of families and the clock is ticking.

Over the last 15 years we have made incredible strides in improving breastfeeding rates in the U.S. thanks in part to the Affordable Care Act which guaranteed lactation counseling would be covered for new moms and babies.

The ACA provisions have NOT changed, but insurance companies are attempting to cut every corner possible to increase their bottom line.

This profit-driven decision made by UnitedHealthcare could literally undo the last 15 years of progress we have made in supporting new moms and babies.

Moms and babies deserve better!

On September 1st, the US's largest health insurance company will quietly change how it pays for breastfeeding care.

Well color me surprised!
We love music and dance parties in the office, but dang if it doesn’t really WORK on milk supply!
A new meta analysis showed in over 600 people in studies all over the world- listening to music helps make more milk!

You’re gonna hear even more Spotify, people, LOL.

We had a baby grooving out to Warren Zevon’s ā€œLawyers Guns and Moneyā€ recently in the office, what should we play for you?šŸ¤©šŸ¤©šŸ„šŸŽ¼šŸŽ¹šŸŽ¤

After a busy week with lots of babies-
Just wanted to share this stunning photo of my very own Niece and her sweet babies.

All teenagers now, but happily breastfed twins no less:)

Hope you had a week getting care and support you needed to feed your babies in all the ways that work for you.šŸ’—šŸ’—
Happy World Breastfeeding Week, ya’ll.

Post Partum Psychosis.
It’s in the news again, right now, with the trial of Lindsay Clancy.

I’m not getting into the nuts and bolts of her prosecution-

But I think the best way to us to make something helpful out of this tragedy is to spread the message about what to look for and actually how prevalent PPP is.

1-2 out of 1000 PP mothers.
That’s as prevalent as HELLP Syndrome.

Let’s all take the time to understand as best we can (still not tons of research)
Those of us who see PP parents need to know what to ask and how to basically assess.

Make no mistake, Private Practice IBCLCs fill a gap here in the spaces between OB and pediatric care.

We spends hours with new families and ask about mental health in those spaces between Peds appointments and the 6 week OB check-

WE HAVE THE SKILL AND OBLIGATION TO BE SCREENING FOR PROBLEMS and referring appropriately.

Every visit, every time.

1 to 2 in every 1,000 mothers will experience postpartum psychosis, yet most people have never been taught the signs.

Misdiagnosing this condition is dangerous. While postpartum depression causes severe sadness, hopelessness, and exhaustion, postpartum psychosis is a psychiatric emergency. It involves a sudden break from reality, including hallucinations, delusions, and severe confusion.

One is an illness that requires ongoing therapy and medication; the other is an acute medical crisis that requires immediate, emergency hospital intervention. Misidentifying the signs delays life-saving care.

Knowing the difference isn’t just helpful, but can save a mother’s life.

As we celebrate WBM-
Lactation Hub put this soooo eloquently.
Speaking the words that need to be said.
Yes we will ā€œcelebrateā€ the ā€œwhat’s workingā€ theme this year.
But we need to talk about what’s NOT.
Especially in the U.S.
šŸ‘‰šŸ½No widespread paid leave
šŸ‘‰šŸ½Insurance coverage for skilled lactation is spotty at best-
šŸ‘‰šŸ½NOT ONE OF THEM, including Medicaid, WANTS TO PAY FOR this care for you and your baby.
šŸ‘‰šŸ½Parents left scrambling to afford skilled lactation care; thinking the doulas do it, the Pediatrician does it or their OB offers it.

NOPE.

So yes we’ll celebrate, whoop de došŸ’œ
But in attaining a goal, advocacy for access to care is something we can’t ignore.

If ya’ll have gotten care from us, you KNOW we don’t hate formula.
What we DO hate is their predatory marketing practices.
In this World Breastfeeding Month-
Let’s be clear.

All of them say they support moms and babies (let’s face it formula is necessary), but what they also do is undermine breastmilk feeding in other subtle ways.
Two things can be true at the same time.
Just remember profit rules supreme.
Did you feel heavily marketed to from formula companies?

Companies that produce breast milk substitutes are lobbying against maternity rights such as paid leave and support for breastfeeding!

Ya know…
It’s this that matters. When people are happy with their feeding goals.
Sometimes those goals are very different from the next person’s- and sometimes goals change with circumstances.
(That happens a lot)

But coming through the other side of feeding your baby? And feeling good about it and your journey?

THATS WHAT I WANT FOR YOU.šŸ«¶šŸ½šŸ’œ
To smile when you remember feeding your baby, no matter how it happens.
Come feed your baby your way:)
We’ve got you.
