There’s a conversation, many adult children never expected to have with a parent:

“ I think you may need a little more help.”

It might start with something small, help choosing clothes, managing a shower, getting dressed, keeping up with grooming or simply remembering that it’s time to take care of those everyday routines.

But when a parent is living with cognitive decline, having that conversation may not even be possible.

Instead, families may find themselves quietly, stepping in, helping with personal care, managing the household, coordinating appointments, and trying to figure out what comes next, all while respecting their parents dignity and independence.

It’s a lot to carry.

And needing help doesn’t mean you failed as a daughter, son or caregiver. Sometimes the most loving decision is recognizing when your loved one, and your family, could benefit from additional support.

For those who have been there, what was the first sign that your parent needed more help than you could provide on your own?

For someone living in assisted-living or memory care, wellness isn’t necessarily about hitting a fitness goal or following a complicated routine. It can be enjoying a favorite song, spending time outdoors, sharing a meal with friends, participating in an activity, getting a good night sleep, or simply having a familiar and comforting part of the day to look forward to.

For families, wellness can also me knowing a loved one is safe, engaged and surrounded by people who know them.

During National Wellness Month , we are celebrating the little things that help us feel connected, comfortable, and cared for, at every stage of life.

What is one simple thing that helps your loved one have a good day?
