Worried about someone but not sure what to say? Here's a place to start.
Be direct. "I've noticed you haven't seemed like yourself lately. Are you doing okay?" is better than dancing around it.
Ask the hard question if you need to. "Are you thinking about su***de?" will not put the idea in their head. It shows them you're paying attention and you can handle the answer.
Listen more than you talk. You don't need the perfect response; you need to actually hear them.
Avoid trying to fix it on the spot. Sometimes the most helpful thing is just staying present.
Follow up. A single check-in is good. A pattern of checking in is better.
If they're in crisis, help them connect to support; the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline is a good first call. You don't have to carry this alone, and neither do they. ๐
